thermostat question
I just installed my 160 thermostat and I forgot to put a pan under the car to catch the coolant. How much coolant usually comes out? All of it? It seems like alot more came out than I put in. I had to use about a gallon and half of coolant and it seems to be holding. But my car is reading above 200 still??? I'll take it for a longer drive tomorrow and see if its better. I might have been high since I had to add another half a gallon while the car was running.

You might have created an Air Pocket in the system now.
The best method to refill the coolant is to disconnect the upper radaitor hose from the Radiator side. Fill the block with Coolant and then reconnect the radiator hose and top off the coolant.
You might need to purge the system also. Once it is a bit warm, bring the RPMs up to about 2000 and hold it there for a 10-15 secs.. then let it off and repeat a few times.. topping off as the coolant level goes down.
Hope this helps..

What does your temp get to? If it is warm it will run a 190 to 200. If it does not over heat you are ok. If you have tuner u can lower the fans on temps and it will cooler. The stock one is a 190.

Its around 200. Even though its a 160 degree stat, it will still get to 200? I thought air locks create severe overheating. I'll be getting my car tuned next week and tell them to lower the fans, thanks for the advise.

Yes. Couple things you need to know though.....first, your temp gauge isn't accurate (it's a dummy gauge, only 98's had the functional gauge), so don't base your readings from it. Secondly, the 160 stat will only keep the engine temps in the mid-upper 170's (I usually see 178*F), and that's when there's airflow going through the radiator (30mph+ or fans on). This means when you're in traffic and the fans aren't running, the temps will continue to climb until they turn on. Hope that helps.
