Default How should I go about modding a stock daily driver LS1?

The topic sort of explains it all. I have an 02 Z28 that is pretty much stock (lid, some free mods). The car is new to me and only has 35k on it. This car seems like it will be a blast to mess around with but here's the thing; this is my daily driver. I am going to be keeping the cats on too so that's one issue. I am not looking to make this car really fast, it is fast enough for me as is but small mods are just fun for me. If I can end up getting this car in the high 12's I would be more than satisfied.

So any suggestions? I am a newbie so I don't know how to really go about it. I was thinking catback, but now people are saying how it might not be worth it since my cats are restricting me. Same thing with headers (even though this would be a mod I might do farther down the road).

Thanks in advance.

From my experience a catback has made a noticeable difference. I've seen quite a few fourth gens make at least 10-15 hp off a good catback.

you can get long tube headers with air hook-ups and high flow cats with a bigger y pipe and a cat back. also i would port and polish your throttle body and mass aif flow. also you can do a throttle body by-pass. then get a tune and w/ good driving and traction that should be good for a high 12-low 13 pass. those are just some simple bolt ons i think you would be happy with.

you already have a lid so get a catback, ported throttlebody, get you a cold air scoop of some sort (fast toys ram air), underdrive pulley, and a tune

spray it. i'm pretty much stock with spray. all of the emissions stuff is on. stock drivability till you spray and that's an instant 100-150hp when you want it. $1k to be safe. $2k to be be very safe.

I wouldnt mess with the muffler as in cost per hp. Get a set of headers and high flow cats and a tune. That should get you pretty close.

Suspension mods imo. LCAs, relocation brackets, adjustable phb, torque arm, and a set of slicks for the strip

Lid, magnaflow muffler (not catback save $), Hotchkis lower control arms (no wheel hop) and you are in high 12s with no issues..think about each mod after these..may be unnecessary for what you are after...

With only 35k on the clock I would buy another car as a daily driver so you don't rack up the miles and mess up the Camaro from daily driving. Its so much nicer when your f-body is sitting in the garage not getting beaten up on and you can go a little more aggressive on the mods if you choose since you won't have to drive it daily.

If it is a daily driver, and your pockets aren't very deep, leave it stock. As soon as you start modding, it really starts adding up quick, and it is the small stuff that you'd never expect. Por ejemplo: you put on long tube headers, even with cats, and you quickly find that you start throwing more SES lights for oxygen sensors than you would have otherwise. O2 sensors start adding up after a while...plus people complain about the ticking you can hear from the engine with headers, etc. etc.

Ever since I got another vehicle for a daily driver, my Camaro has been much more fun to mod and play with. That way, when a mod goes unexpectedly wrong (say you find a crack in the timing cover ), you don't have to stress about losing your ride to work.

I'd have an exhaust shop cut the muffler out and weld in a straight pipe. It sounds 100x better and will cost you $50.

I wouldn't do headers on a daily driver(too much $$$, then you have to reprogram the pcm). Your best bang for the buck is to work on the suspension. Sam Strano can best direct you there.

I swear the best mod I ever did was a set of Koni adjustable shocks. At $700 it wasn't cheap, but it made the car ride nicer, reduce body roll, and made me feel a whole lot more confident attacking curvey roads.

For a daily driver, I don't see the point in gaining a tenth or two. Just do the mods that you'll be happy with. If its a booming stereo, go for it. Fancy rims, those are cool. Better handling, go for it.

I don't see the point in doing mods that will decrease your reliability when you drive the car 10k+miles a year like I do.

Except that the stock muffler sounds like *** and is way too quiet. I did the !muffler mod for $50 and it sounds great to me, and freed up a few hp.
