Default AIR Pump Question, is this Right? (PIC)

After pulling my code, it said something was wrong with the AIR pump. Someone said that it was a bad check valve bank 1 so I went ahead and replaced that, but both banks run from the same hose so I'm curious to how the PCM knows which valve is bad.

Now the real question, I found the stupid AIR pump and was checking it out and it looked like there was a hose end that didn't have a hose on it. Here is a pic, the thing I'm talking about is in the middle of the photo. Is this normal?

GO HERE, if the picture does not work.

Thanks!

Hmmm... anyone know what hose goes on here, and where does that hose go? Preferably someone with a 99, maybe different years look different. Thanks a lot!

is that picture from top side or bottom side? If its top then that is where the discharge hooks up on my 98. Can you feel it blowing when it runs?

It's from the top, I don't know when the pump is on but I will give it a look see. The thing is really dusty like it has been like that for ahwile, or forever. I can't see any hose that might connect to it. The one that runs to the headers goes close but seems to be securly fastened, to the AIR pump, hopefully, but I can't get a good look.

I wonder if the 'hose end' is actually for a filter. Seems I have heard late 90's cars had a filter mounted directly to the pump rather that a hose connected to the lid

So might it be an inlet for air to go through the system? Should I buy a filter to put over it? Maybe thats why one of my check valves went bad???

Could be, wish I knew for sure. While the engine is cold start it and see if you feel air being sucked in. The AIR pump comes on at cold engine start up and whenever the PCM switches it on. Here's a couple of drawings of the 99 AIR pump that might help. Otherwise I might visit the dealer and ask them what is missing.

Great pics man! Those look like mine so I guess mine it normal. Except the first one has a 90 degree bend on the "inlet" and the second pic doesn't. It kinda looks like the cylinder is already a filter, because air goes through it then into the real pump.

Cool that's what I hoped you would say. In the second pic, the cylinder looks like the one in the pic you took of your car.
