Default Opinion on Grotyohann headers

I have Grotyohanns long tube headers on my SS and they are getting some surface corrosion and his wonderful y-pipe finally rotted and broke. I am either going to have trueduals installed or just have a new y-pipe made up and re-installed. Since the headers aren't looking that great, I may buy new headers but theres nothing wrong with my other then a little surface rust; I might have them re-coated...what do you think: keep the Grotts or go with another brand: QTP, KOOKS, ARE?

get any of the stainless ones. I got ARH's and they are a quality piece. The ypipe is great too.

if i went through the trouble of taking the headers out and reinstalling them, i'd put the money toward stainless headers instead of recoating them so your not reinstalling them just to rust again. i'd go with the new style XS headers unless price isn't an option, in that case i'd go with kooks.

Pull off your old grott headers and get them recoated and them get a custom y pipe. Use the flowmaster y merge. I would love to sell you a set of our headers but as long as there is no rott in your headers there is no reason to get a new set of headers. Grotts are a great design. That what we designed our headers from.

Does the QTP y-pipe mount up to the Grotts?

If its the ball and flange design then it would be a no. Take a couple of pictures and send them to us. I think he ran a short collector on the driver side which would not bolt right up. With a little work maybe. And if you have to modify one then your better off going custom.

The problem is here in northeast Ohio we don't have any "CUSTOM" exhaust shops other then stainless works and they're really expensive. I have a couple friends that work at my local Meineke Muffler but they don't have a mandrel bender there and the machine they do have won't do 3 inch.

Keep the Grot's. They are basically a collector header now.

That is why they are rare. Happen to be a VERY efficient design. Notice that is where Barry said that they got their inspiration from. QTP makes a wicked header too. A very low percentage of F-body's on the road still have the Grots. They stopped making them several years ago.

I still have a set on my car, they're like a village bicycle, my car is at least the third car they've been on, they're good, just a little rust where they scraped, but then again, florida doesn't have "salt" on the roads.

If I take them off, i'm replacing them with some cast iron manifolds (with turbo's on them)

Yeah, you can sell them for a decent amount too as far as pricing for used headers go.

Keep the Grots, order some mandrel bent tubing from summit, Jegs, flowmaster, etc, and have your buddies from the muffler shop weld it up for you. Use a flowmaster merge. Good luck!

If it's any consolation, Grots were some of the very first long tube headers you could buy for the LS1 Fbody's 10 years ago or so. They are a great design. I'd re-coat them and call it good.

Here is a pic of mine with the ball/seat collector as described earlier.
