Any tips for my upcoming cam swap?
I know a lot of you guys can do this stuff with your eyes closed....I'm beginning my cam swap on the Vette on Wednesday and was wondering if anyone had any tips.
So far I have:
-typical sockets, wrenches, breaker bar, etc etc
-1/2" and 3/8" torque wrenches
-balancer puller (Chrysler style, which I hear is the best)
-Tim's valve spring tool, 24mm crank socket, 918HAWK balancer install tool
-5/16" steel rods to retain lifters
-oil, coolant, power steering fluid
-spare oil pump o-rings
-new belt, crank bolt, underdrive pulley
-grey RTV
-red loctite
Plus the cam, springs/locks/retainers, pushrods, timing chain. Re-using the stock LS6 oil pump and lifters.
So I think I have my parts covered, although I think I'll need an 18mm flare nut wrench (is this completely necessary for removing the power steering lines?), and some Torx bits which I can get from my friend.
Aside from that, does it look like I'm forgetting anything?
Any tips for the swap to make it go smoother?
Thanks
Matt

I dont know how you are planning on holding up the lifters, I wouldnt rely on them just staying up in the trays. EVER. Get you a couple of 5/16 dowel rods from Home Depot/Lowes for like 2 bucks. Cut them down to around 25 inches I think was what I cut mine too, and oil the bitches up really well. Saves like $96 over the Thunder Racing Lifter Tool. Be really careful with that damn oil pump o-ring too. And dont forget plenty of beer to ease the nervousness/anxiousness of first start up :-). Good luck.
Edit: I see now you have those. Lol.

Well so far everything is out, springs are changed...but I cannot pull the cam. The lifters won't stay up in the trays, regardless of the fact that I have 5/16" rods in the block. Going to pick up pen magnets in the morning and hope for the best.

Uh yes. The lifters are not going up high enough I think. Going to pick up some pen magnets now.
If the cam itself isn't swapped by the time you get to my house Dave, just kill me and burn my car.

i dont get what your saying that the lifters arent high enough?? They barely move? The rods will slide in the 2 hole ports, and put pressure up against them, and they will hold.
But do wht you gotta do i t guess.... but never had a problem with the dowl rods?

Trust me a few of the lifters were falling within a minute or so with the dowel rods. I used the pen magnets and it worked out great. I was nervous as ALL HELL and had the old cam out / new one in in under a minute. Finished up the install around 6:30 and it runs like ****, but it does run and everything is fine. Getting dyno tuned tomorrow so I'll have some numbers soon.
Dave, I wanna get wings with you guys sometime soon so you'll be able to see it then. I'd apologize for not needing your help, but I think it's a good thing that I finished so early.
