Default Removing Cylinder Heads with ARP Studs

I need to replace the lifters in my 2002 F-body. I have ARP studs holding my heads down. Can they be removed in the car with the studs? Any tricks?

yeah they can still be removed. Its just a little tighter. Worse case scenario, just drop the k-member a little bit to get the extra clearance.

Just pull the studs out with an allen wrench before you pull the heads, that way the heads come off very easily.

No need to leave the studs in place and fight with the head, thats how **** gets banged around and nicked up.

Mine went on with no issues so they should come off with no issues. I did, however, remove the A/C lines.

Good luck

Interesting point about avoiding nicks to the sealing surface. But I thought one of the 'extra benefits' about head studs is no coolant gets in the bolt holes of the block. I've never used the studs, I went with ARP bolts due to cost.

Actually, you have to leave the studs in place on the passenger side, in the back. There isn't enough room to remove the studs with the head in place.

Just get an extra set of hands to help lift off the head squarly as not to nick the bottom of the head.

Yes the heads will come out no problem. I've done this tons of times in the car, with the studs still in place. Don't worry too much pulling them off and getting any nicks, as your heads should be resurfaced anyway (at least a cleanup pass, .003 or so) before reinstalling.

When you install them back on, if you've never done it before with studs I would have a buddy help you keep the head steady while you slide it down. This will insure you don't booger up the deck surface.

Thanks for the advice, used a FelPro instead of a MLS and 14pds pushed the gasket and now I have to replace the gaskets.

This ten year old post got my attention. I've contemplated doing this also but I have six bolt cylinder heads with the ARP stud kit and working from up top looks like a PITA to me.
