Default PRC heads being recessed for big cam. Shrouding power issue?

If you get the ever popular PRC 5.3 heads and you go with a cam ms4/torquer 3 or bigger they recess the valves to avoid hitting the pistons.
How does this shrouding affect performance?
Is the slightly bigger cam worth it or getting the biggest came without recessing the valves better?

We have not noticed any kind of power loss from doing this. As you can see in my sig I have the MS3 with the 5.3l heads and made great power. We have been able to put out consistant numbers with that setup on multiple cars with no problems. The MS3 is the only cam that we sink the valves for more clearance, the rest of our cams clear with no issues.

OK
So the torquer 3 clears 5.3 stg 2's without sunk valves, even if it has a 114lsa, because if so that would be something I would definitly consider?

Yes the torquer 3 would clear on a 114, it will even clear with a 111 LSA as well.

I know everyone wants the 111lsa so thier FI car can idle like a top fuel dragster, but I have other cars for that and I rather it idle great and pull vacum.
Have you guys done any comparisons on the Torquer v3 with 111 vs 114lsa?

We have had a few customers order a Torquer v.2 or v.3 on a 114 LSA for a smoother idle. The wider LSA will help idle quality and vacuum, but it will not be a huge difference. We can have the cam custom-ground for you on a 114 LSA if you like. Custom grinds will typically take 2-3 business days before they ship out. The cam works really well for a nice "street/strip" cam that will have a noticeable idle but not be so aggressive that you're annoyed to drive it.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Anyone know how much deeper (dimensionally) the valve seats are cut on the 5.3 heads for the MS3 cam?

IMO 114 LSA is too wide and pushes the powerband too high making the cam a bit sluggish in low to mid range. (on 230+ cams)
In that range I prefer 112 or lower

To make sure the head clears we only sink the valve .005" & we carefully select the cylinder heads we use for the smoothest possible deck surfaces. This helps us to only mill the heads .001"-.002" for increased clearance.

With a typical set of heads we can milling .005"-.007" off the head & not worry about clearance.

Basically the MS friendly head configuration is a effort to get every little bit of clearance back without hurting air flow.

So to answer your question the valve being sunk a little bit isn't hurting power. You do however get a little bit less compression than other PRC 5.3l heads that ship, but that's the main difference.

This is only done for MS3 configurations. The good news is we're now taking preorders on PRC 215 cylinder heads which can ship with MS4 friendly P/V & 59cc chambers!!!!
