Default Squeak/chirp *not a pulley or header gasket*

What next?

Pulled all belts and checked all pullies, still makes the noise w/no belts on
Header and exhaust is tight.

sounds like it's coming from the middle of the motor, passenger side of the motor

However the belt tensioner on the main drive moves while the motor is running. Example: you're looking at the motor from the front of the car and the tensioner moves side to side slightly.
Don't know if it's supposed to move a little or stay still all the time

Should the tensioner itself move at all while the motor is idling?

I had a chirping sound before and it was my top ring gualded to the #7 piston making noise in the cylinder

was it chirping all the time?

Mine is owrse when it's a cold start, but quites down a little when it warms up.

But if I run it hard, the sound comes back and takes a while to go away again after easy driving.

My chirp only happens when I turn off the motor and I visually confirmed it happens when the tensioner moves.

My car does the same thing, it doesn't run any different. Does it on cold start up but goes away when it warms up.

I've seen the rollers on the lifters seize up momentarily and cause a flat spot in the roller then it starts to spin again causing a high pitched chirping noise. Pull all your belts, accessory and A/C belt and start the car, if the noise is still there and it sounds like the motor (you might want to get a stethescope to make sure) then you might want to pull the heads and check the lifters/cam for flat spots. I've seen it on 5.3s more than any other but 6.0 and 5.7s also. I know that it sounds like a lot of work just to check but it's something that I've seen before!

With all belts removed?

Stick or automatic?

Last time we heard of one of these it was a lifter. Pull the oil drain plug and see if you have metal shavings.

Did you pull the belts and see if it goes away? The idle pullies on our cars have a tendency to make noise over time.

It makes the noise without the belts, I'll pull the head off and check out the lifter. I thought that it could be that.

I'll buy a stethescope and double check, but I have a feeling it's the motor myself.

So did you pull off the tensioner? If it's also moving without the belts, just remove it and perform the test again and see if it goes away. Could always squirt a little penetrating oil on it as a temoporary fix/test.

To be honest it was a couple years ago and I can't remember if it was all the time. I do remember I could tell what side of the engine it was on. Didn't have any metal shavings either. We didn;t find it until we tore the short block completely down and saw the rings were gualded on the piston.

Quick Reply: Squeak/chirp *not a pulley or header gasket*
