Need to give me details about the car...

Stock engine? Modified? How many miles?

There's a lot of things that can create a "tick" sound. Exhaust leak, check valves in the AIR tubes going bad, clogged up pushrod not allowing oil to pass through, etc etc etc

So the heads have been pulled off the engine before?

Replace the check valves in the AIR tubes. These can create a ticking noise. If you're not familiar with them, this is what they look like however yours are more than likely black in color..

A leakdown test would also be a good idea to make sure no valves are bent.

Doubtful it's the cam. Thats a rarity unless you have a valvetrain problem somewhere else.

Did you replace the lifters with new ones? That shouldn't be the problem if so.

Keep in mind the injectors also put out a "tick" sound.

is it a high pitched tick or a low pitch. it sound like a crazy question, but i have seen them shrink a piston over time and make almost the identical sound.
