How can I tell between a LS1 and LS6 block?

Yep, lots of info on this subject if you do a search, but I believe the # to check for is 12561168. It should be on the back of the drivers side near the transmission.

it was something like 15% of the 01's and 20% of the 02's had LS6 blocks. i checked mine when i did my clutch and it was the 12561168 (the LS6). its NOT a rumor, but if you have it, it doesnt mean you have an LS6. you still have LS1 internals with LS1 heads. the LS6 heads were the 243 casting number, not the 241s. the only benefit you really have with an LS6 block with LS1 internals is it has better oiling properties. supposedly (and dont quote me on this) the LS6 block is one of the best blocks GM ever made for oiling.
also if you decide to do different heads with forged internals, than you can say you have a worked LS6

Checked my engine from my 01 SS vert the other day while it was sitting on the shop stand and it is
12561168. Kinda made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside lol.
