Blow-By...Sewing Machine
Hey Guys,
Ok I FINALLY got the car running. Only 1yr later, lol
The engine has of course ben sitting for awhile. Its a stock short block w/ 101K miles. Nice cross hatching in the cylinders. Has new heads, oil pump, timing chain, El Torro cam,etc
Anywho, WITHOUT the PCV line hooked up to the intake, I get a nice steady puff from the oil fill cap. I keep the pcv line off so the car will idle (no tune yet)
As soon as I idle it up a lil and put the pcv line on, BAM..no more blow by (of course it is sucking it into the intake)
So is that kinda typical? I mean if there was still blowby AFTER the pcv was hooked up, then that may be bad?
And as far as the sewing machine.
It is a stock block, 230/230 .612/.591 111+2 cam, 243 heads, GM MLS gaskets, 7.425 pushrods, stock lifter (had 50K on them), and Manley dual .650 springs.
I am getting the infamous tick tick...Should I maybe check my rock bolt torque?
ALSO...I am running Castrol Tection 15w40 synthetic blend oil and see 50psi at idle. I am just running this oil for a few hundred miles, then switching to 10w30 castrol syntech. I get the oil free, so I'd run it more, but its a lil thick.

7.425 might still be a bit light on the preload. Could get pushrod checker but think there might be easier way to get a rough check. Put valves at tdc. then see how many turns to get it tight from zero lash. Think its roughly .012 or so for each 1/4 turn. So if you only get say 1 /4 turn your preload would be like .012 way under spec.
I did this with pushrod checker and it seems I get about .060ish with 7.4 with my combo.Thinking of trying 7.425 or even 7.45 to get more. I was getting a lot of racket when had it at 7.4 but with .050 shims under my yella terra 1.8s which in effect made the pushrods way shorter.
as for the blowby likely you are going to get some..run compression or leakdown if you really want to know whats up.
