Rebuilding an ls1, which cam?
I have recently aquired a LS1 with about 50k on it from a local dealership. I plan on tearing the whole thing down fixing a few problems it came with and eventually building it back up a few extra goodies thrown in. I currently have a 99 T/A which i plan to run it in when i'm all done. I plan on using the porting the stock heads and using them, but I'm not sure what cam i should use. I will probably add an LS6 intake manifold and a new throttle body but other than than that I'll probably keep the engine mostly stock. I'll also be using longtubes so the exhaust issue's takin care of. Any insight as to what cam would be best would be appriciated. Thanks guys!

Looking to do about the same thing, the cam I have choosen is a 224/230 on xfi lobes with something around .600 lift. You should do an ls2 timing set and an ls6 oil pump while you are in there and im also going to do some arp rodbolts because from what i understand they are a weak point.
If you dont mind, how much did you pay for the motor at the dealership and how did you go about acquiring it. Is there something wrong with it? Id like to get a full shortblock with rotating assembly. And also a lowish mileage tranny.

Hmmm....sound's like you don't wanna go too radical, but a little mild. If you do reuse the stock heads and want an aftermarket cam...I'd do the valve train upgrade; titanium retainers, hardened pushrods, dual springs. imo But hey, check out Texas Speed, they have many various cam and cam/valvetrain packages. Personally, I'm hoping on getting the Torquer v.2 in the spring from TSP...funds permitting. lol But check them out and see what they have. Also, I'd look at Thunder racing...they have a variety of cams to choose from.

Plus one on the LS2 timing chain and ported LS6 oil pump. Replacing the timing chain is a recommended when doing a cam change...plus the LS2 chain is a lot stronger than the stock LS1. And the oil pump will be completely exposed and easy to change when swapping out the cam.

The tr224 is an all around great cam for a daily driver. Not really big or small. You can't go wrong with it.228 is also cool, a little bigger .It all depends on your goals.Might as well do the ls2 chain and oil pump while your in their.I did a melling 295.Pushrods wouldn't be a bad idea also.

Hey thanks for all the insight guys! I think i might end up going with tr224... i have done some research and it seems like it might be the way to go and as for the valve train i planned on going with heavier springs, pushrods, rockers, and all that good stuff... but thanks again
and mike as for how i aquirred the motor... i happen to work for the dealership in town and saw it sitting out in the shop so i asked around about where it came from only to find out that one of the mechanics had takin it out of a 2000 camaro because the rings were shot. long story short i ended up payin him $200 for the whole engine, a new gasket set, and a new oil pan! talk about a sweet deal!

The stock rockers are fine. I would leave them in there.
