Got a 3-4k limit that I want to spend... Make some packages for me to choose from
I just bought a 99 t/a that has a bad trans for $2k... Id say it was a pretty good deal based on the car runs awesome, holds good oil pressure, and the body looks really good. ANYWAYS
Like I said it needs a trans rebuild. So lets start from there... where should I go to get it done/how much should I spend (dont forget, this is a part of the 3-4k being spent)
I want the car to be streetable, with a pretty hefty cam I would say... Not that the sound means anything, but everyone knows it is badass... In my case I would go with performance over sound.
Was thinking about 5.3 heads, should I get some that are P&P with bigger valves? I dont know! thats why Im asking you guys! Let me know what you people think. Thanks!

Yeah my vote is for kooks but it all depends on how much you wanna spend on that stuff. Is Your car a 6sp or auto? Id say tranny built with cam install and some spray

Hey,
Sounds like you got a great deal! Congrats!
The setup that LS1-Navy lined out will work very well and will give great results. Just my 2 cents, but I thought that I would mention that I have had great luck with my TR-224 112 cam with Patriot LS6 heads and LS6 intake. The 112 lsa Thunder cam has excellent low and mid-range power and pulls great to my shift points at 6200 rpm, plus it has a mean idle. I love my setup and with a 100 hp wet shot, it's pretty much all you will need on the street. Even with drag radials and some suspension you can draw black lines on the pavement as far as you want.
Good luck!

Don't bother with heads right now.
LS6 Intake - $300.00
FLT Transmission (LVL4+) - $2,000.00
Yank SS3600 or SS4000 - $750.00
Cam/Springs/Related - $1,000.00
You can get over 400rwhp with a proper spec'd cam (not a monster - mild), and you'll have the transmission that will last you for a long time.
Don't waste your money on a rebuild from "Enter Brand X" transmission builder. With even a Cam install a "factory" type rebuild won't last a year. Do it right.
Edit: You need headers didn't see you didn't have those. Pacesetters for budget. Upgrade to ARH/Kooks when you have to go to 1 7/8" (bigger cube moter, etc). That's my plan.

I would definitely buy a good tranny/ 3600 converter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
slp air lid, headers, and a 12 bolt with 3.73 and a tune!!!!!!!!!!!!
You WILL have a very reliable street car if you spend the big bucks now, plus;
you can sell your current 10 bolt, many have been going for $300-$400 so some money bach there.
If it was a 2.73 gear car then you have the steel driveshaft....Look in the classifieds and get and aluminum one, a lot lighter and it will be good if you go with 3.73 gears.

Oh and get some sticky tires with that combo and rip off some nice times at the track, not to mention the local cobra!
with that combo and internally stock i went 11.8 @ 114
well, with what i listed above i had the ls6 intake, free mods, underdrive pully, and removed the front sway and bumper support.

With $4000 for the tranny and mod's, I'd say stay with bolt on's at this point.
What mod's does the car have if any?
I'd do all the basic maintance first and make sure I know exactly what sort of condition the car is in. You know oil, air filter, fuel filter, change if the fluid in the 10 bolt, grease the car, maybe have the radiator flushed, make sure the belts are good, are the radiator hoses still good, brake pads good etc.
Now what do you want to do with the car?
How much daily driver use if any are you looking for? If you only plan an occassion trip to the street the Level 4 tranny might be overkill. If your going to drag a lot then go for that type of rebuild.
We have to spend
Transmission Rebuild with basic upgrades ~ $1,500.00 (if your racing a lot spend the extra $400 listed below for the tranny that Chrome mentioned.)
Yank Converter in the 2,800 to 3,200 range ~ $750.00
for $2250
that leaves $1750
Quality Used Catback ~ $300
Ported TB ~$150
LS6 intake ~$350
TR55 plugs $15
Lid ~ $100
Basic Tune ~ $250
Fast Toy's Ram Air set up or similar $150
that's another $1165
leaving ~$435 for either unexpected stuff or a start toward headers and cam...or tires if your racing a lot.

Ok, well right now all the car has is a SLP loudmouth on it... I know of a reputable place locally that will do (their level 3) for $1100. I will go used on the majority of the stuff that I buy aswell. Im like that with everything, the onlyu thing Im sketchy on buying used is a TC, they make me nervous. The past 2 I bought (for 2 different cars lol) they were used and worked great. I want to buy as many of the parts from this website aswell, it seems that everyone looks out for each other when it comes to scammers and thats awesome.
thanks for the info guys... anyone else have any input?
once this thread wears out, I will make a list with prices and tell me what I should change

I personally wouldn't install a used torque converter behind a brand new transmission unless it was checked out by the manufacturer, or if I knew and trusted the person selling it too me.

ok, so lets say I go with some 5.3 heads... are they all 706 castings? and if so, who should I have port them and install bigger valves? Any recommendations? The heads are the only thing I am not sure about. Ive pretty much decided on the
LS6 intake $300 (buddy will sell me one he has)
Ported TB $150
3600 stall $400 (found a low mile used vig)
Transmission Rebuild $1,100
5.3 heads $125 (should I go with these? then get them re-worked) https://ls1tech.com/forums/lsx-parts...ing-heads.html
UD pulley $100
Lid $75
Tune $200
I dont know what else I am missing but this makes about $2,450
Let me know!
