Starter problem.....stuck at school help!
Ok so the nightmare that has been my past week continues. My 99 z28 refused to start today. The car wouldnt even crank you would turn the key and nothing happened at all. So i figure bad starter right? I jacked the car up and had someone whack the starter while i cranked the key and it fired up. Whatever i go to advanced auto parts pick up a starter put it in and i turn the key and the gauges are dead no lights at all the radio is dead, but the interior lights , ext lights, power locks ect all work fine. Now bear in mind i disconnected the battery totally when i changed the starter to avoid any problems like the one im having. Please help guyss cuz im stuck at school and my car is gonna get towed if i cant figure this out

If you aren't hearing any noises upon startup it's got to be electircal,, I just find it weird that when you hammered the starter it started. Generally they will make some noise but just not turn over. Did you recheck the all the wires were secured to the starter?

yeah the battery was tested fine, i feel like something shorted. I just really dont know what.
To the other guy all the wires are secured to the starter, bear in mine the only eletrical compenetes that dont work are the gauges and the radio. Also when the key is in the ignition the car beeps like normal but when you turn it it stops like normal just the gauges dont turn on neither does the radio

Not really sure what all is going on with the dash and what not, but just to check and see if the starter is hooked up correct and working. Under your hood directly behind the battery on the passenger side fender well is a black one wire plug with a purple wire going through it. Unplug that connector with the key in the car turned off, you can take the end closest to the battery using a jumper wire and jump it to the positive post of the battery. This will crank the engine over in the event that the starter and all of its wires are hooked up correctly. Given that this works, then with the key on in the normal run postition and the car in park or neutral "you didn't say if it was m6 or a4" you can repeat this and start the car. Now this should atleast allow you to move it so long as it works till you can diagnose the problem a little further
