who to get a "fancy" valve job from?
im probably going to be cleaning up my 853's sometime soon. im no pro but this certainly isnt my first rodeo either. ive been porting heads for about 5 years now just for grins, its fun for me and a challenge.. so please no "save it for the pros" if my car is slow because of me i'll deal with it - dont worry about me.
anyhow i've done a lot of reading on how important the valve job is, read some articles joe mondello wrote ( it hink thats his name) and i actually found some good info on hardcorels1 also.. but im wondering if anyone can recommend me someone that does decent work for a decent price? if there is such a thing lol.
SAM is in houston and im in beaumont basically.. wonder about them? like as in i wouldnt be afraid to donate my heads for some of their students to learn on as long as they didnt bomb them..
anyhow im basically just lost on who to contact or even HOW to contact them whoever they may be. id appreciate some ideas/input. theres a local shop that does top notch work as far as machine work goes but they are only setup for a 3 angle... nah.

sombitch.. you helped me with my dilemma zero.. but thanks for chiming in........
but yea i may do that actually. but ive read a lot of his posts and he's a firm believer in charging top dollar for his talents. i guess im tryin to ask around and see if theres someone else who does good work for someone like me who is on a college student budget. if i could afford the best i'd have already called up ed or bret.. and i wouldnt be dealin with 853s. i dealt with ed several times in the past when i was doin mustangs and he hooked me up time and time again.. needless to say im a pretty loyal customer when it comes to valvetrain now. back to my issue..
if i wanted a 3 angle id just stick with the stock valve job? (heads/car only has 29K miles as of today) it is 3 angle correct? i sure would like to pull another 10 or even more cfm in the midlift range or hell wherever, as that would be an improvement.
im a small engine mechanic currently and i do valve jobs probably on a weekly basis but the tools we use are by hand, and pretty much single angle.. (the other angles are mainly used to manipulate where the valve actually seals to the seat since all of my jobs are refreshers not starting from new) so im not gonna pretend my elementary *** could even begin to modify the valvejob on my car heads. nah. thats why im askin questions.. i dont hold the keys to all the "dark arts"
anyone else?

yea that could be an option depending on the cost of my other "fancy" options. it possibly would not need the VJ, but after porting it would be wise insurance. besides by now im cool with the guys down there, i know they'd do me good. never the less im lookin for extra hp

Not trying to be d!ck so I am sorry if I came across that way. If I knew somebody who could do as good a job and not think so much of themselves I would surely let you know. I am VERY sure they are out there but I dunno off the top of my head.
My advice to you is to talk to your local lsx speedshop and get recommendations.
Check out how he did in the Engine Masters Challenge sometime. LOL

the other thing that holds me back from asking bret.. im 99.9% sure hes going to automatically assume im a moron since im porting my own heads.. and then im supposed to pay him good money to do my valve job on "budget" heads all the while hes pointing the finger saying "dumbass". no thanks. from reading his comments/ideas, i respect the guys opinion and dont question he is a very gifted individual, i just dont really respond well to the personality he displays on the net, and therefore would rather explore other options at this point.
plus "budget" if im going to spend 400+ bucks (prolly more?? and add shipping to and fro) on a valvejob, then i have to get em milled a tad and then throw springs at them. im approaching a grand. for another 500 bucks i could have somethin cnc'd and proven. lol sounds like im talkin myself out of the fancy valve job, and ill just get what i can get.
yea local lsx speedshop doesnt exist. the closest speedshop is 35 min away.. and i really really mean this.. those guys are clueless morons. i had more knowledge about makin somethin haul *** when i was 15 years old than they do combined lifetime totals. i have no idea how they keep finding cars to foul up and customers to screw
like i said im about an hour from houston it'd be cool to find someone from over there to help me out

It's cool man. Sometimes I just come across the wrong way without meaning to
If you are near Houston you should talk to Greg Good Cylinder Heads. I have never personally seen any of his work but he was on the "top head porters" thread here and does a lot of Viper stuff so I am sure he could hook you up with a sweet VJ

Hey SpeedDemon aren't you the kid who trashed a set of heads by putting to long of pushrods in them??? I've seen you talk a lot a smack about a few shops, seems like you screw up and need someone else to blame it on?

Second, it's not how many angles, it's what angles that make or break a valvejob. You'd be surprised what shops just go with your standard 30-45-60 with a 70* bowl cut and call that a "performance" valvejob.
Greg Good/HKE would be my first pick, but I don't know what kind of price/turn around time that would be. Robert @ LME would be my second pick and they'd probably get them back to you pretty quickly.

Hmm.. sounds like speculation to me? Having met Bret a few times... I don't believe this to be exactly true.
Corey,
Call Bret and mention my name and Santa... Who knows.... He might get in the christmas spirit?

Nope the guides were trashed as soon as Lloyd had his machine shop broach the guides after he ground them down paper thin. They were cracked, not worn out. Thanks for your concern though. There were also a lot more issues with the heads than that and if you would like to know the details feel free to pm me.

Can you provide some performance that speaks for itself?
I also find it curious that a bunch of LT1 customers suffer from valve float with his valve train setups. I see that he has gone to another LS1 site since he keeps getting banned from the main sites with non-sponsor soliciting and his continuous bashing of LSx performance shops when he has no real results to post himself.

i have no clue what shops are in your area but if your looking for a "budget" valve job any reputable machine shop should be able to do it, regardless of what engine you have.
if your looking to gain a few more cfm your going to end up spending extra money for the right work. back cut valves are also an option to get more flow, but also cost more.
you have to make a decision budget or power....and by the way, some EXTREMELY high end shops here on LI only bang you about 250 -300 for a valve job.....
whats your budget?

Dare I say it, but if it were me being in TX I'd go straight to Craig Gallant (if he's still in the business) before even coming close to exerting the energy to pick up a phone and dial Bert.
