Default Will bent rocker cause tapping?

Will a bent rocker cause a loud tapping (and by loud, I mean a car with true duals next to me cannot hide it)... my mechanic believes thats the reason, so I figure if it is, I'll do a swap for a new set I found on Summit.

Also, is there any advantage to upgrading them? I might do H/C later, so...

if you going to do the lifters you might as well do the head swap you said you were thinking about, because the heads have to come off to do the lifters.

i highly doubt you have a bent rocker arm and its slightly possible that its a dead lifter but its a very good possibility that you have a bent pushrod.

I agree on the pushrod. Are they still stock ones?

As far as I know. I just had my Dad look at it, he thinks its a lifter, he's worked on Harley engines for the past 20 years...

How much more difficult is it to fix a pushrod?

Pull the Coils, Valve Covers, and all the Rockers, then take all of them out and start looking at them. I just put all them on a Table, and see which ones roll wierd.

pushrods are much easier than lifters. do what it says above, should take no more than 30 minutes to get PRs out.

Keep them in order and in top/bottom orientation for re-installation. If you know where the noise is, then just pull that one and the ones on either side of it to start with. Usually caused by an over-rev, miss any shifts lately?

Never, but the previous owner autocrossed it, so he might have. It pops out of third all the time, but I think that's a tranny issue.

It's coming from the driver side, or atleast, its louder over there. I might try this tomorrow.

What about the gasket? Will the valve cover leak anything? Can I just pull it apart and reinstall it? What about oil?

put a tad bit of oil on the pushrods when installing them back in, it will help them not to be so noisy when you start it up after the install.

So I can just pop them off, inspect and put right back together and everything will be just as it was? (assuming I do it right)

Yes, worst case if the gasket is bad (they are rubber and most times re-usable) you will need to replace later. Not as big a deal as running with your current issue. There is also a removal and re-installation procedure for the rockers. Here is the GM re-installation procedure.

See if you can get a 24mm wrench on it. Not familiar with the f-body as I have a Vette. In the Vette, the rack sits right in front of the pulley and you are limited to what you can get in there. Having the plugs out will help when its time to turn it. To find TDC, watch for the #1 intake to close and then bring the piston to the top.
