Default Reusing a cam after spun rod bearing

My buddy spun a rod in his car and is building a bigger engine. We tore his engine down and pulled his cam out and it had no scoring or scratches on it. All of the valvetrain looked fine. Push rods looked straight.

What I want to know if it's safe to reuse these items. He is also giving me his 241 heads which are a little better than mine. How much would it cost to get these cleaned?

Thanks for your help

As long as there are no marks on the items, don't worry, you can reuse the parts.

If there is no scoring on the bearing or lobe surfaces, I see no reason why it couldn't be re-used. it is a hard part in which wear can be detected by sight.

I have no idea how much it would cost for someone to "clean" heads, usually you can do that yourself.

Take the valves and springs out of the heads. Take the castings to the local carwash a little purple power or super clean and the hot soapy water will clean them right up. Then assemble the valves back in the heads with some lube and they will be just like new even clean. Just be careful not to blast the valve seals all to pieces or buy a new set for them after you clean them.

Send them out for a valve job while you got the heads off. They ought to be clean when they come back.

One other thing, if you are going to re-use the lifters that were in there when the bearing spun, make sure you take them apart and clean them, as there could be metal particles in them that you don't want getting into your new bearings! I just did mine recently after spiinning a bearing. the cam and lifters were fine, but I did take all the lifters apart and clean them and did find some particles in a few of them. Brake parts cleaner and compressed air works like a champ! HTH

I know a machine shop in San Bruno can get the job done, looking at about $100-200 depends on what you need to do with it. PM me but don't quote me on the cost.
