question about running temperature
I want to know what the normal temperature range that an '02 z runs at. I have noticed that it runs at about 200 degrees, and my brothers '98 z runs at around 180. The are both stock except my brother has an 80 series flowmaster. Is my Z running warm, and should I have the dealer look at it and cover it under my warranty. FYI, just got the z this past saturday so I am just analyzing it.

Re: question about running temperature
Your temperature sounds about right for an 01-02, My 98 has run at 180 ever since it rooled off the lot in 1998, but I have heard many 01-02's running 200-210.

You're not going off of the factory temperature gage are you? If you are, the '98 is about right and the '02 is nothing more than a glorified idiot light.
Autotap it to see what it's really doing.

I second that motion. If you check the temp with scan tool you will be surprised. I had the same issue after a 160 thermo install, that turned out to be a non-issue after scanning and getting a digital reading.

Re: question about running temperature
so you are saying that the stock temp guage is inaccurate? Sounds good to me. I figured there was something weird about it. I am just glad that it is running correctly.

Re: question about running temperature
the way the gauge works on a 98 is different from anything 99 and up. It's the only gauge that reads somewhat accurately. If you take the advice above you'll see what I mean. Autotap will show you that they are probably running around the same true temp, however, your gauge will read right around 200.
There are lots of threads on this if you search. The question usually comes up right after a person installs a 160 thermostat and wonders why the gauge still reads the same temp it did before the swap. Autotap will show the temp change, but the gauge is crapola.

The factory gauge is hokey, but a car without the
fan settings reprogrammed will sit at 210F unless
you are moving forward. The thermostat is 195F
but the fans don't come on until 210F (stock).
