Default ASA cam?

So I am pretty much dead set on getting a custom grind cam, new springs, retainers, yada yada...about $900 for everything I'm getting. Custom spec for stock ls6 heads. I was just reading a thread though, about an ASA cam, and was wondering....how is it? The heads I'm getting have the ls6 springs on them, and the ASA cam only has like .525 of lift on intake and exhaust. How is this cam for street/strip applications? 110 idle, so it should sound mean, but other than that, what are your guys' opinions? Thanks.

I really wanted to get it but the super low lift turned me away. I ended up ordering a ms3 (237/242, .603"/.609" 112LSA)

Yea, ms3 was another option. Both are good for spray...which is future plans...but right now, I just can't decide. Its been ms3, vrx5, custom street sweaper, and now this lol. What lobes are these on? If it is LSK, then out of the question, since I need some valvetrain life.

If I had the money, that would have been my plan. But for right now, this is more a budget build. Eventually, AFRs, or TEA heads will be on it, along with a ported FAST 92/92 set up, among other things.

Look up my buddy on here JBIRD02 and look at his sig for ASA cam results. You will be quite happy and will wont have to worry about changing your valve springs like everyone else

I had the ASA in my old 346, absolutely loved it. Never dyno'd but ran 114mph at 1500DA in my PIG HEAVY car (9", 17x11 rims, 3" steel DS etc) running out of gear at the stripe. Stock 98 heads and ls6 intake. Several videos of it in my sig. You can expect close to 400rwhp cam only with it if you've got most bolt-ons and a good tune....and the idle is sexy.

idk about the other two cams but the ms3 and the asa are two completely different cams. Where and when they make power are waaaaay different. U might want to post up your goals so people can help you spec something. But for what its worth, i had the asa cam and absolutely loved it. Probably the flattest torque curve out there. Nothing like the ms3. Although if your looking for the best et's you might want to go with something like the ms3.

Eh, this isn't a max effort build, and I wont be reving out to 7k...looking to shift at 6200, to 6400 rpm, and that is what I put down on the cam sheet for my custom grind. Just a street/strip car, heavy (having my system, no weight reduction), weekend car. Not looking for stock drive ability, obviously, and just want something that makes good power, sounds good, and isn't too too peaky (that is why ms3>ms4 for me). Unfortunately, I cannot get the custom cam sheet until I make payments...so that is the only reason why I am kind of turned away from it. Plus, ASA will be cheaper, since my 243s are already assembled, so I don't have to worry about springs and whatnot. Just at that point where I am trying to figure it all out. I don't want to replace a cam every year, to experiment or something lol.

I bought the ASA for my first cam, for the same reasons you mentioned... Sounds mean as hell and is cheap w/cheap springs. I got it tuned right after. I wasn't happy with it, so I got the tune adjusted. It came out better, but was never streetable in my mind.

It never made good power for me. With full bolt on's (minus underdrive pulley) I was at 360rwhp on a mustang.

I ended up pulling it out and swapping it for a pat g custom grind that works much better. Drives smoother and makes more power. Although it doesn't sound quite as mean. The cost difference between the two wasn't nearly as big as I thought it'd be. And in the end ended up costing me more because obviously I couldn't sell the ASA for what I paid for it.

I would not recommend it for most applications.

Just my .02

Well all dynos reed differently....did you new cam get tuned, and put on the same dyno? That way atleast you can see a difference? 360 seems low, but hell.....my stock dyno was hella low, but out on the streets, or my trap speeds at the track (won't get into 60 and et....street tires=no bueno at the closest track to me), it runs well.

What was wrong about it streetablility wise? To much lope, and bucking and whatnot in the lower rpm range?

The ASA cam has more bark than bite IMO and doesnt behave the best at idle and lower rpms up top it does just fine. If it had more lift things might be different. I would say a 228R on a 112 or a VRX4 would perform better all around esp when you open up your engine more with the ls6 or better heads/ Fast intake etc

Here is 2 good options with any cam you want even custom grind (5 dollars or so extra for custom)under $700 for each complete kit and you can sell your ls6 springs

http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=174&catid=49 Cam Kit with Comp 918 (up to .625 lift)

http://www.texas-speed.com/shop/item...d=175&catid=49 Cam Kit with Dual springs (up to .660 lift)
