Should I or shouldn't I? The question is - should I rebuild or do I not have to?
Here's the deal:
2001 Z28 LS1 76k has been brought back from the dead by mua. Everything except the engine. It has piston slap, has a bad valve and/or rings - it eats about 2-3qts per oil change.
I want to soup it up, it's basically stock internally. I was going to do nitrous but a guy told me the bottom end wouldn't take it and I should rebuild. Which if it's the rings, yes I would anyways. But if it's only a bad valve (which my trusted mechanic would bet money on he says), do you think I'd be okay running nitrous without a rebuild and just doing a valve job?
I don't really WANT to spend the money to rebuild it right now but I don't know if it'd be a waste of time fixing only part of the engine.
So should I rebuild or just fix what's wrong?
PS What mods should I do to soup it up a bit? I'm not looking to spend a fortune but I was thinking a cam, nitrous, bigger injectors, and tune. That's not too hard on the bank.

Valve Yeah, I am going to pull it into the shop and squirt some oil in there and see what she does.. I'm just thinkin ahead so any thoughts would be great.
OH AND has anyone seen this piece by QTP #10100 lift plate that you put on your intake and pull the engine out from the top? If I do pull it out, that's how I'm going to do it.

Why? I dropped mine out the bottom, and I can't see how coming out the top would be easier...
I would vote to rebuild as well, especially if it's going to see the bottle.

I don't know if I want that shadow following me - never knowing when it might go. It's always bothered me.
So I guess I'm really wondering is it worth it to rebuild just because of the piston slap or can I just fix the valve and soup it up a little.

I'd do a leak down test on the low cylinder and see where the leaking air is comming out. If your lucky, it will be comming out the intake or exhaust.
In the time it takes you to pull enough parts off the engine to pull it out the top, you could have had it out the bottom. And there is noxt to no chance of damaging anything like could happen getting it out the top.

I planned on doing it to mine because I built another engine on the side. But I kinda just started pulling it apart and didn't get to. lol Piston slap itself isn't too bad but 2-3 quarts between an oil change doesn't sound good.

I'm going to confirm whether it's the valve or rings on Saturday then I'll update here.
I'm thinking fix the valve, soup it up a bit and take her till she blows.
If I find out it's the rings - then I gotta think about what I want to do.
