Default cam degreeing kits?????

1.) Should a person degree an ls1 cam (fbody) with the heads on or heads off? Is one method more exact than the other? Is one method more difficult to accomplish on an ls1?

2.) Based off of question #1, which ls1 degreeing kit is most recommended or most commonly used with success?

thanks....

Question is, are you doing heads too? If so, I did mine heads off so I could check PTV once the cam was locked in place. I bought the Comp kit:

Comp Cams LS1 Crankshaft Socket Part #4914
Comp Cams Cam Degree Kit Part #4796
Comp Cams Dial Indicator Extension Part #4912

1. Either way works. Heads off will be easier, but heads on is doable. But both methods are accurate if done properly.
2. Whatever kit you buy, make sure it comes with a small degree wheel if you are leaving the engine in the car. Anything bigger than 9" diameter and it will hit the accessories mounted on the front of the engine and the sway bar.

I have a related question, what if you have your new cam put on a cam doctor and find out it's exact specs? That should tell me about the same **** I would find out by degreeing right?

Not necessarily. Cam doctor will give you specifics of the cam itself, but not its installed position. However, if you know it is right on the money then there is less risk in a dot to dot installation, but you still won't know exactly where it is relative to ICL position.
