Default Engine smoking, heard whirring noise from fuel tank, & codes

Coming home from the track my SES light stayed lit so I knew something was wrong.

While making a slow turn I hear a whirring/buzzing sound that I thought came from the engine, but my passenger in the back swears it came from right behind him around where the fuel tank is.

I pull into the gas station and fill up with 14.4 gallons of gas (so I think I had about 2 in the tank).

I then am sitting in a fast food restaurant line, and my car starts to smoke! It looks as if the smoke is coming from the engine (fairly sure but it could have come from elsewhere), and the inside of my car now smells like something is burnt. The smoke only lasted for about a minute or two, and then randomly stopped.

I come home and ATAP'd the car and it said I was throwing codes P0172 and P0175, Fuel Trim System Rich Bank 1 and Bank 2.

I've heard that this code could be indicitive of a bad fuel injector or bad fuel pressure regulator, but what would cause the car to smoke like that and make that wierd buzzing sound?

This morning I tested the LTFT's at part throttle and idle, and they were perfect.

During the smoking and whirring/buzzing the driveability of my car was not affected.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped.

Check your pants... because if I had smoke coming from under my hood, I KNOW I'd need to change mine!

Any signs of what could have been on fire? Any problems/codes today?

Nothing bad today.....

Just did some small idle testing.

After checking the fuel lines under the car, I noticed this:

I have a fuel pressure regulator (I don't think its a true regulator, but allows you to raise your pressure above stock levels)

It sits in my car like this:

Well, these are old pics. Right where the nut is on this unit, and right where the cylinder part of the body meets the square part of the body, it looks like fuel is leaking out.

I'm not sure if that would have caused my issues or not. It looks like the fuel has been slowly leaking out for a while.

I made it alright, and so far the LTrims were perfect. I'm going to do a fuel pressure test next.

I had a fuel pressure regulator go out on a 5.0 Ford van one time. It would run fine for a little bit, start running bad, then smoke and finally die. It was flooding the cylinders with fuel.

Those symptoms sound like what I may be going through. Hmmm... Except my car ran OK, however I was just idleing while it was smoking

I didnt notice that you said smoke from under the hood. I was thinking it was coming out the tail pipe. I still think its a FPR problem, you're probably running very rich.

Hey,

Where did you get that adjustable FPR? I've been looking for an adjustable one that replaces the T-block like that. Extreme motorsports used to sell one for the F-bodies but I was informed they quit manufacturing it. I haven't been able to find one like that at all so far.....

I got it from a guy that custom builds them here in town. They aren't cheap. I think $200-$250 is the normal selling price. If you're interested in getting one I'll see if I can put you in touch with the guy that builds em.
