Default Is it normal for ls1 engine to burn oil?

hi guys,

i'm about to pull a trigger on a 1999 camaro z28, i'm really a newb with camaro, and i don't know the nature of the engine, the owner of the car told me that it's normal for the ls1 to burn oil, now his car burn 1 quartz every 3,000 miles

my question is, is it normal for ls1 engine to burn oil? and furthermore is it normal to burn 1 quartz every 3,000 miles..

furthermore, i'm not mechanically inclined, i'd really appreciate it if you guys can give me some advice on how to check the condition of the engine..

if i take the car i'll have to drive it back to oklahoma from florida, so that's going to be a long trip..i don't want to stranded in the middle of nowhere..

thanks in advance,,

Ray

How many miles are on the car? It's normal for any vehicle to burn oil if the engine is old and tired. What you are most likely referring to is the less than adequate pcv system in these cars. People with 20,000 miles on their vehicles can be a 1/2 quart low every oil change. It's just something people deal with.

Quarts not quartz It is never normal for your car to burn rocks. Mine was about 1 quart every 1.5k depending on how bad I beat the hell out of it. Since the LS6 valley cover swap and not beating the snot out of it, oil consumption has reduced drastically!

My car burned 1 quart every 1k miles until I removed the PCV system, and the motor had less than 20k on it.

It is not normal for an engine to burn oil. What makes it normal for an LS1 to burn it is because of the poorly designed PCV system.

I work on BMWs for a living. Some of our current models go 15,000-18,000 miles between oil changes and don't burn a drop.

All cars burn an amount of oil. How much depends on the PCV system, crankcase press, mileage on the engine, compression ratio, naturally aspirated or boosted, etc. 1 quart every 3000 miles may be annoying, but definately not excessive.

My A4 car has used a quart every 2000 miles since I bought it at 33,000 miles. 79,000 now. Doesn't bother me.

Get the newer fixed orifice PCV valve, it helped my car a BUNCH. I was eating about a half quart between oil changes. I swapped to the fixed orifice PCV vale, and when I changed my oil the last 2 times, it wasn't low at all. At least not a measurable amount on the dip stick anyway.
