Default Going Bigger Cubes - What options??

So I'll hopefully be picking up a C5 FRC in the near future, and plan on going bigger cubes...

Not really sure what would be the best engine combination though - 383? 402? 408?

I plan on driving the car on the street 90% of the time, but it won't be a daily driver, and maybe take it to the strip once in a while. Don't plan on going FI, and probably not even run nitrous. I think I will just keep it N/A. I want to be over 500 RWHP and 500 TQ.

What would be the best option for me to go with?

Also, who should I get the engine from and who should I have build it? I'm located in north Florida.

Thanks!!

As big as possible. It'll keep it more daily driver friendly and of course make it easier to hit you RWHP goal with a smaller cam.

How much cash do you have to throw at this build?

Well I was hoping to spend maybe $10k between everything. Not sure if that's realistic or not.

That $10k includes the complete engine (heads/cam.. everything), exhaust, intake, new clutch, and injectors.

Is that a realistic number for everything? Just kinda adding up stuff in my head.. Will it be more? Less?

You can resleeve the block you have for about $1,800, then go from there.

For $10,000 you can have much more than 500 RWHP with great daily drivability.

I'm not saying buy from these guys, but this will give you an example how easy it is.

Get something like this, around $4,500.

Ported L92 heads and a L76 intake, maybe $2,100. Cam in the mid to high 230's and you'll make about 530-550 RWHP (M6) and have a very nice smooth idle.

Wow a 427. I never even thought of going N/A on a 427, always thought 408.. I guess 427 > 408 huh??

Just assuming from your username, you have a 427, right?

Yes, I have a 427ci. And to give you an example of how much power you can make with a new 427, compared to my 7 year old 427.

I have ported LS6 heads and ported LS6 intake, stock ported TB. 11.3:1 compression, my cam is a 244/244 .610/.610 114 lsa. Idles so close to stock after its warmed up and I made 490 RWHP.

You can do the same thing...427 cubes...but use the new L92 ported heads and ported L76 intake, 90mm TB, smaller cam in the mid to upper 230's, same compression, and you'll easily make 530-550 RWHP, probably more. Less than $10,000 for sure. Great reliability, should last for 100,000+ miles.

L92 heads and L76 intake, 90mm TB....will stomp my LS6 stuff. Thats where the extra power will come from between my 427 and a new one.

I never looked into the L92 heads or L76 intake.. I was thinking AFR heads and FAST 92mm..

Are the L92's and L76 intake better for a 427?

There's many combos that will get you to your 500 RWHP goal, that really isn't alot of RWHP these days to get from a 427ci.

But for a budget engine, and still top of the line parts....L92/L76/90mm TB will surpass your 500 RWHP goal easily with a 427ci and it'll be cheaper than going AFR/FAST 92.

And I don't even think the AFR's flow as good as ported L92's. Have to check that, either way they are very close.

How much were the AFR heads and what are their flow numbers?

I'll have to look into the price difference between the two different options...

Here's the link to flow charts on the AFR 225's - not really sure how to read it lol. And they cost $2400

The first chart would be for you using a 4.125 bore. Big bore head.
They flow 320 cfm on the intake and 250 cfm on the exhaust port. Cubic feet per minute of air flow.

Ported L92 heads beat them pretty good and I think they're about $800-$1,000 less. They flow in the mid 360's on the intake.

Oh wow if that's the case I'll definitely be going with them.. flow numbers the only thing to consider when looking for heads?

Not really, there's velocity and other things people will talk about. But when you have an engine built by a true expert they will make everything match nicely. But yes, 320 cfm heads won't do as well as 365 cfm heads, when everything is built to match properly. Meaning the cam, heads, intake and compression all being matched properly.

There's alot of ways to screw up an engine build. Only one way to really build them right.
