taping noise

taping noise my car has a taping noise, sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the engine, can't really hear anything under the hood, car only has 40k miles and was bone stock when i bought it with 36k on it. cant seem to figure it out, but would like to get it figured out or fixed before the shootout in a few weeks. oh, when in the garage it is easy to hear and on occassion it doesnt do it. seems weird to me. anyone have similar experiences or imput as to what it might be.
