Default Picked up new Fbody with ticking noise ! ideas please !!

so i think i got a good deal .. so i picked up a 98 z28 .clean tittle 6 speed with about 130k miles ..

dude sold it to me said it started making noise when his girl drove it ..
the car is definatly low on power .. but still runs ok minus the ticking noise ..
completly stock with absolutly buthing done to it ..

im thinking collapsed lifter bent or broken pushrod broken rocker or worst case senerio a spun bearing..

he says hes been driving it with the noise for the last few weeks and it actually runs pretty good at freeway speeds (im guessing speedo is not working )

so what can it be sounds exactly the same as everyother ls1 with broken t bent pushrods ..

i have a bunch of spares . ima check all rockers and pushrods first . then go from there .

just brought it home a few mins ago just wanted to knw what everyone tought !

I'll bet $ on it being a bent or broken pushrod, being a stick car. Lifters seem pretty tough, I doubt thats it, but i've seen them spin before! I've only broke 1 rocker trunion before

well hopefully its a quick fix the ower believed it would need a complete rebuild wich is how i got it soo cheap ..

i have new lifers and pushrods as well as rockers from a new gm crate engine i bought a few years back .. so im reaaaaaaalllly hoping its only valvetrain issues !

im trying to wait a bit before i order my 408 ..

Ticking can be normal. Pull the pushrods and check em.

First, I would not buy a car that had a "ticking" noise.
You can use the old school mechanics stethoscope by cutting off about 3 ft of broom handle. Then put one end to valve covers and other end to you ear and listen for noise, clicking, etc. Do the same along block below exhaust manifolds. This will help you pinpoint the problem from rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, cracked piston skirt, etc.
It worked for me. (cracked piston skirt)

You would if you knew you were just going to drop a 408 in it.

Just drive the car. Who cares what it is. It has 130K on the clock. That's like asking what's wrong with an 95 year-old man. He's ******* old, that's what's wrong. These cars whistle and tick and click and generally sound like pissed off sewing machines at any age.

Take it out and do a big, long burn out, then get it going 130. If it does fine through that, **** it. If it doesn't, well, then you know it's time for the 408.

ha ha i like the way u think sharpe ! lol

well i pulled off the valve covers and all pushrods and rockers .. all those ******* seem fine ..

i did notice 1 spark plug wire wasent even connected to the spark plug ..

yeah i knw these things are noisy but what bothered me is that it was low on power .. either way ima pull the heads off tomorrow and check lifters .. ill check the pistons and the rest of the short block .. ill put in a new set of lifters pushrods and rockers that i had from a new gm crate motor and call it a day .. run it till she blows ..

ha ha trust me i got the car for a good price .. i wouldnt have cared if it even had no motor !

so ill see what else i can find .. anyone else ? any input ?? would like to fix what ever it is right now so i can at least have the car running while i get the 408 put together ..

Well, you think the ticking was the wire arching? That'll tick. And cause power loss, as I'm sure you know.

Sounds like the ticking was just the wire arching.

Oh, ****!

Dude, I have some 241 heads from a '01 T/A that look tip top if you're just looking to get it back together. I might also have some of the good LS6 valve springs (from 5000-mile '04 Z06) that I would throw in free. $150 shipped. Now, that's a deal, especially if I have the springs. People sell those springs for good money on here. PM me if you want. Good luck.
