98 cylinder heads have a notch on either the head or the block. I can't remember which? I am sure someone will chime in

To start they are perminate mount valve covers instead of center mount valve covers wich means they don't have coil pack brackets to bolt to covers, I can't remeber for sure they are either 806 or 853 casting numbers. They say the 241 heads on the newer LS1 were better but my 98 and a friend of mine had a 98 Formula 6 speed with just a 3.73 gear and a flowmaster muffler on the stock Good Year GSC tires went 12.80s. They had 28.6lb injectors witch are pretty good and the best exhaust manifolds I think they ever put on the F bodys. The 98 were hit and miss in some screamed out of the box and some didn't (lol). This is from my opinion and I have had a few F bodys from LT1 to LS1s.

The 98-00 had the worst flowing exhaust manifolds. 01-02 got shorty style cast iron manifolds. The heads for 98 other than being perimeter bolt really weren't any worse than the later years. 98-00 had the same cam, but 98's had 28lb injectors while 99 and 00 had 26 lb ones. 01-02 used a different cam, the truck one I believe that lowered the powerband, but couple with LS6 intake and better flowing manifolds made more overall power.

I think 98-00 had a quicker opening TB profile.

All differences aside, they performed about the same really, mostly a driver's race and some freaks that came from the factory.

If I remember now, you can not put a 99 and up head on a 98 block due to a small section that is raised on the block

You can run any Gen III Cylinder head on a 98 block. There are differences in the oiling and a few minor things but they are interchangeable just have to change valve covers ect. I dont believe 99's flow as bad as everyone claims, look at the flow numbers and yes they are lowest but the way bashed on here you would thin they flowed half as much as the 99-02. I am by no means a flow expert but have done a little research on my own trying to decide if I should replace mine with 241's. I would replace them if i could get some 243's P&P!
