Default To Port or not to Port?

I just picked up a set of 243 heads because the price was too good to pass up.

Patrick G is going to spec a cam for me and he asked if I was going to P/P or mill them. I have been trying to decide if it's worth it to P/P these heads or not. I'm going to have the machine shop mill them if needed but was going to leave that alone as the static compression will be a bit high with just the swap.

This coming fall I'd like to buy a block and build a bulletproof stroked bottom end topped with AFR 225's and a D1SC. That build may take me awhile though as the cash trickles in. I can't go crazy or the wife gets mad.

So right now I am looking for toque down low, the car isn't a daily driver for me and I don't need emissions testing in my state but it’s no trailer queen and never will be. I do take it out on the street and it will see the dragstip at least twice a month and want to keep it good mannered . I'm not looking to outrun Corvettes on the highway, just on the 1320.

I just don't know if I should waste the money on a p/p for heads I may only use for a year or two.

Will I really gain any great numbers if I port them?

Right now my mods are: 2000 FB A4
LS6 intake, 160° stat, MSD wires, NGK G-TR55,Volant, Kook LT 1 3/4", Kook OFR 3", Hooker CB, Quick Time Perf 9" 3.70, Detroit locker, Moser 35 spl, Spohn LCA, PH, TA, DSSL, QA1 DA Rear, SLP STB, BMR SFC. All of the emissions crap has been shut off by my tuner. He increased shift pressure as well. I think that is everything I can think of.

I was going to swap out the lifters, springs and PRs while I had the heads off. I have heard the PR's were susceptible to breakage. I have also heard an oil pump is a good preventative maintenance item too.

Mostly looking for thoughts / opinions on the porting and polishing on the 243’s but will take advice on anything you might see room for improvement on.

i would say its definetly worth it to have them ported. if you keep the flowsheets you'll be able to sell them for more than the stock ones go for.

I ended up sending them off to TEA to have their Stage 2 porting done ($1300), also having them mill them down to 62cc of chamber With the right gasket it should put me right around 10.9-11. If I buy the AFR's down the road I'll just sell them like dre2013 said.

Definately a good move to have them ported. We offer cnc porting with valve job & milling for $650 & if we add valves it'll ad something around 10-12 bux a valve.

For 650-850 depending on valve configuration you can expect to gain atleast a easy 20rwhp.
