Default *New Build list. Debating on Trex,F14,VRX5 for my setup. Input needed!*

Hows it going guys. Well I was going to go turbo ,but since my 2 previous cars have been turbod, I have decided to go the NA route and I thought learning turbod cars was difficult. Real quick breakdown of my car. 02 Camaro SS. Already has SLP exhaust/SLP LID. Basically stock. Now i rarely drive my car. It has 4,000 miles on it and it is only driven during the summer. Mainly on the street running with all of my friends cars and sometimes at the track. So its safe to say it is NOT a DD. I have narrowed my choices down to 3 different Cams. My goal is around 450rwhp and would love to have TQ up there as well. Now onto the 3 choices that i have narrowed down too.

*T-ReX v.2 - 242/248 - .608/.612 - 110 Lsa
*VRX4-228/230 .588/.592 112 Lsa
*Futral F-14,( I know their are a few different ones ,but was undecided)

List of Supporting Mods:
LPP Stainless steel Headers
Y pipe(No Cats)
Motor Mounts(Poly)
U/D Pulley(SLP or ASP)
LS6 or Melling Oil Pump(whichever i can find a better deal on)
#42 Injectors(Ford Racing)
Dual Patriot Gold Valve springs and Ti Retainers
Pushrods (7.400)
Valve Stem Seals
*I will install heads most likely over the winter and i know i wont see the biggest increase without installing heads and I am sure what i have listed will give me a great start, but what i have listed now i plan to have by summer.

Now I'm sure I overlooked something or made a rookie mistake, but that's why I started this thread and have you guys. I will continue using the search button and look back at what you guys have said in this thread.
Thanks
Dan

Also I forgot to mention was a TB and a Ported Intake. I wasn't sure if this was a must before a cam install. I would think a ported intake would be ,but wasn't sure if a TB could be installed after a Cam.
Thanks

Get these supporting mods for your 450hp goal:

1. Melling High volume oil pump!
2. 38 or higher fuel injectors

But it will be hard to hit 450+ without a good set of heads(like trickflows as cast version for 1600.00) on a mustang dyno. I would go with a VRX5 cam in my opinion. My mods and numbers are in my SIG!
Goodluck!

I was debating on #36/42. I will update the build list as the thread goes on. I would have added a poll ,but i feel like sometimes people just vote and do not give feedback on their reasoning.
Thanks for the quick response

With the Vrx5 isn't that a real rough idle?

Whats up Detox. I saw in a few threads your were going with that. What came down to you choosing that? I tried calling them today but no answer. Do you have an idea what the hp/tq range is with bolt ons?

Well I was going to do a Cam only until winter came along next year where i would look to add heads. I saw a nice write up on a thread with Trex cam afr heads and stock short block and hit 500 rwhp. What is your definition of big cam? the Vrx5 or the f14?

You narrowed your list down to 3 cams, but the 3 cams are not even similar cams? Let us know what kind of goals you have in mind. You said 450hp is this just a good number you want, are you just going for peak hp numbers? You rarely drive the car so big numbers are probably more important than anything. You know to brag to your buddies right? Do you want the thing to shake rattle and roll like a race car or do you want nice street manners with a great torque curve? Do you want to change out your rear end gears or do you like what you have now. I know with my setup I have a great torque curve and it pulls great up top. I lost 0 power anywhere, more power even at 1500 rpm. If you have the slp dual dual you can put a pretty ratty cam in there and still get it to idle smooth, mine does. With the cutout open is another story.

I appreciate you breaking it down for me and my apologies for not being clear.
-I want the thing to sound mean but have the numbers to back it up.
-I would like to see the bigger numbers,Power under the curve would make the most sense i would think.
-I plan to keep the gears i have now.
-I would like to run a cam only for about 6 months.( I hear the trex is pretty good with stock heads)

PM me your specs and your numbers if you dont mind.
Thanks
Dan

Waiting to hear back from Ron at Vengeance racing. I'm going to try and put together a package from him and hopefully grab a good deal. Please continue posting on your input with the cams i have listed.
Thanks

Appreciate the help. Throughout me searching I recall you agreeing with the Futral Products. Keep me posted

*Edit*
Just got off the phone with Futral. They recommended the F14(no Highlift). I mentioned everything above along with rarely driving it ,but maybe a beach run which is 2 hours from me probably once over the summer. He said to play it safe i should throw in the 4.10 gears so I don't surge. If i recall Vengeance/Thunder racing did mention new gears ,but i told them i would like to stay stock and they said that would be fine.Any feedback to this?
Thanks

i love my vrx4. makes good power, pulls like hell all way through rpm's. makes gobs of torque. but it dont sound mean at idle. very little lope. but i wouldn't trade it off though just for the idle lope.
