You can use the crank and rods but you'll need a piston set to match your bores.
408 is 4.030 bore and LS1 bore is 3.898, slightly bored can be 3.905.

So are you wanting a 408 as well or are you just going to use the parts that came out of the 408? What block do you have or are you getting? If you have and LS1 you cannot do a .030 Bore like SSdreamz said. If your going to get an LS2 then you can do a .030 Bore and still have your 408. Let us know what block you have or which one your gonna get and we can help you out a little more. To go ahead and answer your question Yes you can swap your Crank & Rods over to another LS-Series Engine.

Right....with a 4.00 Bore. How far can you Bore an Alum LS2? I know on the Iron Block you can do at least .030, Maybe more but I dont know. Can you do .030 on the Alum. LS2?

NO, from what I have read it can take a light hone only. About .005".

Would that be considered maximum allowed? How much meat was left on the linings?

You can typically get away with up to a 4.020" bore with an LS2 but that is pushing it IMO. (Especially on a power adder build.) We haven't seen an issue at all going 4.010". If you are wanting to go .030 over on a 4" bore, you need to look into a 6.0L iron block. However, there really won't be much of a gain in only .010-.020 of bore size difference. At the point you are buying pistons, get them the smallest the block will clean up at. That way you still have room for clean up down the road and keep the sleeves as thick as possible.

I took my LS2 to 4.035. It ran for a while until I wasted a rod bearing (oiling problem) making a pass. Then it broke the rod and the sleeve in that order.
