I use a razor blade, then wipe it off with lacquer thinner.

Get the big stuff off with a plastic scraper, then use a scotchbrite pad with WD-40.

I used a wire wheel on a drill, but was very careful to not gouge the block.

used a razor and 3m gasket remover (spray) for the big stuff and finished with a 3m rotaloc "medium scotch brite" on an air grinder on low speed.. same as my engine guy uses btw... and it is as clean as i've ever seen a deck....

3m gasket prep Roloc pad on an air angle grinder. After you hand scrape the thick stuff off first.

I recommend not using pneumatic gasket removal methods. The roloc pads have embedded abrasive particles that sling off pretty much everywhere, not to mention the fine aluminum dust that is removed from the deck surface. Neither material is ideal for engine internals, no matter how well you clean or block the the lifter valleys or cylinders, a small amount WILL enter the engine and contaminate the oil.

There is actually a GM service bulletin on this issue. I know it saves a ton of time, but your engine bearings will thank you by not wearing out prematurely. What I do is use spray on gasket remover and an assortment of scrapers. Usually ending with scotchbrite soaked with naphta(sp?) solvent. Then use non-flammable brake cleaner spray to wash as much away, with plenty of red shop towels to dry the deck surface.

After that, clean the head bolt threads.
