Default newbie lq4 question

hey guys im a newbie to ls engines as i am a mustang guy but really like the power of these ls engines. my next build is gonna be an lq4 setup that i have my heart set on. my plans so far are the edelbrock performer carbuerated manifold, cam, and weld up a set of long tubes for what its going in. my power goals are 400-425 rwhp and probably a 75-100 shot on top of that for when i take it to the strip. my question is what set up will get me to my power goals. i have been shootin around the idea of doin a light port job on the heads, but from my understanding 400-425 is pretty attainable with this engine? sorry for the long first post guys.

Don't take this the wrong way, im not trying to be a dick, but take some time and look around the site. There are SOOO many combos that would get you to your goal that there is no way to tell you which is better then another, and everyone would have a different opinion.

Find a good LQ4 motor to start. Add 243 heads, all the usual bolt ons, upper 220's cam, and kit. Not tough to do at all. Cam choice would depend on quite a few things. That's the ballpart you need to be in though.

no need to spend on the 243, since the stock 317 are the same thing but with larger chamber, if anything mill the stock 317 .030 along with a l92 gasket will yield 10:1 scr. if need more scr, then milled 243 can get to around 10.6:1

That was the reason to suggest the 243's. A nice bump in C/R without sacrificing PTV clearance by milling and using skinney head gaskets. I just added a pair to my boosted LQ4. Runs better in all realms now.

good advice so far thanx guys. i think i may go with a home port and mill the stock heads. i wan't a decent sounding cam at idle but its going to be my street car with maybe 10 percent track use so i don't want a cam thats meant to rev to the moon.

Stock LQ4, Comp Cam 224/230 .570, L92 heads. Made 468fwhp SAE on a stingy dyno.

since u have no exp. with ls motors, its in your best interest to just upgrade with rev 2.02 valves and a vj. no other work required, dnt go and hog out the port. not needed.
with milled heads on a stock lq4 and gt11 cam with 2.02 valves engine put out 354rwhp in a heavy *** rcsb wit stock intake, shorty headers, stock intake, tb. and tune.
a larger 220 durtion cam will make for stronger performer

hoggin out a port and porting a head are two different things, i may be an ls newbie but i know that at least. i've played with 2v 4.6 heads a little with decent results and let me tell you if you want to mess with a crappy port go play with a set of those heads.

yea, and ive also ported a set of ls heads and made just under 500rwhp
with 375ci. and it was very basic clean up bowl, valve throat area, etc. so i know its not needed for a street engine. just with 2.02 valves and vj will be enuff for just about any street build. if looking for more then some proffesional ported heads are on order.
