Default What can I do to make 500rwhp?

I would like to make about 500 hp and 500 ft lbs at the wheels. What would be the best way to do this without nitrous? H/C/I? turbo? supercharger? other mods? My budget is $6000. Is that enough or should I wait until I have more?
My car is an 1999 A4 trans am with an SLP lid, FTRA, and magnaflow catback, but I am willing to start over if I need to remove any of the mods.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
PS I know I need to do something about the transmission and rear before I do major mods.

I know of a 408 local to me thats 24x/24x cam, ported 317 heads, FAST 90 through a 4L60 making 475/475 so it shouldnt be too hard with a set of aftermarket heads(AFRs/DARTs/TFS/whatever).

You won't get that power NA in a a4 unles it's a good sized stroker. I would go supercharger and boltons and call it good.

Thanks for the quick reply. Anyone else? Should have mentioned that I would prefer to keep the displacement at 5.7 liters.

Question

Thanks guys. I'll start looking into forced induction. What kind of power do you think I could make Hamrdown? My real goal is low 11s in the 1/4 mile. Is it possible?

if you want times, get a nice stall and some drag radials. quite a few people have hit high 11's with bolt-ons and a stall. then you can do heads/cam with the rest of the money.

500rwhp in a A4 is mid 10 sec territory. I ran in the 11s with boltons and a 4k stall with suspension mods and slicks.

this is what i would do

415 shortblock from schwanke 3300
l92 heads/intake kit from SD 1500
custom cam something like a 224/238 .609/.605 112+4 would be nice with prc duals and pushrods 750

that puts you at 5550

500+RWHP all motor

better start saving for a built trans while your at it. with that kind of power it's only a matter of time until she goes especially with the early models

I know. I've got a some money set aside for the tranny and rear end. I will be having those replaced before I start the motor work. I will probably also do a brake upgrade.

I believe your referring to Patrick G's "recipe to 500 rwhp heads and cam" thread. It's an excellent read but it's for a M6 trans. That would equate to about 440-450rwhp in a stalled A4. Plus it definately wasn't cheap to achieve.

I'd wait until I had 16 grand vs 6 !! You can build the motor up but your trans is going to go, then your rear end will explode or vice versa. Do it right all at once. You build a motor to 500/500 to the wheels and your a4 tranny and stock diff are going to be the weakest links, aka ticking time bombs. You'll also need to look into a tire upgrade. Sticky tires that will hold that kind of power in a stalled auto will be expensive and won't last long. Drag radials will be decent. I have Nitto drags 305's in my m6 stroker and they hold once up to temp. Too much throttle though and first gear goes up in smoke. Second gear will hold WOT. Too badk I can't go WOT until I get a better fuel pump since I am going lean up top. Guessing the stocker has gotten tired since half her life she's been overworked feeding 400 rwhp or more. LOL Good luck doing it for 6 grand.
