Default Newbie cam install question

This is my first cam install and with the cam retaining plate torqued down and the timing chain gear off I can move the cam back and forth so I just wanted to make sure that it was supposed to be that way. I didnt know if it was supposed to be tight in there with the cam tight against the plate.

mount a dial indicator on the back (or in the alternative, front) of the block to measure cam end play.

fore/aft cam movement should not exceed 0.012 inch. if it does, there may be a problem with your cam, retainer plate, and/or cam sprocket.
