Default AFR 205's or LS6's w/cam choice

Hey guys, I am getting a pretty good deal on a set of AFR 205's with 65cc. But, this will lower my compression that I have on it due to my LS6 heads on my Z06. I am also looking at small-medium sized cams. Like a 224/228(AFR cam) or a 228/232(G5X1). My mods that I have already are LG 1 3/4'' Longtubes, Vararam, Borla Stinger cat-back, and a tune that put down 387whp 381tq. I will be making an annual drive with this car to Tennessee from Tampa which is about 626 miles. I also want something that has good street manners and won't stall coming around a turn in a parking lot or buck and surge all the time. Looking for good power under the curve but want some top-end power also. This car sees 150 miles per week MAX. Anyways, what heads do you guys recommend going with? THe AFR 205's with one of the above mentioned cams or stick with the LS6 heads or maybe get some stage II ported ones? Any feedback is appreciated.

I would go with the AFR heads. You could always have them milled a little, if you want to bring the compression back up. I had a 224/228 cam w/XER lobes in my previous engine and really liked it. It made good power and was still good for daily driving.

The AFR 205's and 224/228 always makes great power. My parent's could DD a car with that combo and think it's built that way! Add a ported Fast setup and your set.

As mentioned just getting the AFRs milled will actually give you higher compression than stock depending on how far you mill it. Mine were milled to 62cc and running 0.040 cometic gaskets puts me a hair over 11:1. A machine shop should only charge $50-$75 or so to mill them.

i agree with red99ta,i have same heads milled to 62cc with .40 cometics, the 224/228 cam is a great dd cam and still gain 35 to 40 rwhp with a tune, plus the 50 rwhp for the heads, its tough to be an afr headed car, trust me i know,i havent lost yet,go with that setup and you will be very happy.

Going to the 65cc from the stock LS6 heads, would the CR difference from the two really be significant as far as power gains?

Losing 1 cc of chamber volume will only be about a tenth a point of compression, but running a .040 gasket will add an extra .4 in compression over the stock .054 and will lessen the quench height.

Sorry to hijack. How much power are you making with the 383?

It would depend on the deal you are getting on the AFR's.
The 243 castings can be worked to make awesome power by a good porter.
Then get with Patrick.G or Predator Z to spec you a came to match you heads.
