Default Possible I have a small cam?

I just started up my MIL's 00 SS m6 and noticed her idle is around 700rpm or so. Hers is stock down to the lid and CAGS. The idle on my car has always been 1000-1100rpm since I bought it, even before I did mods. The idle on my car has always been slightly rough but I never really thought it was cammed. My car did have a lid, k&n, free r/a mod and the trimmed egr valve when I bought it but that was it as far as I know.

I raced a LS1 T/A m6 w/ a rebuilt motor with an LS1 intake, 212/218 cam and catback a few months ago and always pulled him in 3rd. The guy didn't want to believe me when I told him all I had were bolt ons.

Do the 98's just idle higher than the newer years or am I on to something? Guess the best way to find out is to take the valve covers off or hit the dyno. Kinda makes me worry about the valve springs a little though since I've put 30k miles on the car.

Any input on this?

I would check for aftermarket valve springs. That might tell you.

my 02 m6 idles at 750 with stock cam. 1000 is too high for an idle, imo

That's what I was thinking. Pull the valve covers and check for ls6 or aftermarket valve springs.

Well I bought the car at a Dodge Dealership, maybe the idle was bumped to hide any lope? Not sure but I guess I'll be finding out soon.

Or your PCV system is sucking air like mine was, causing a higher idle and leaning out your engine, which might gain you a few horses. It is a possibility after all.

Good point. What would be some other symptoms though? Burning oil and possibly shoot my dipstick out of the tube some? I remember reading up on bad PCV valves recently.

BTW, does anybody have any side by side shots of ls1 springs and aftermarket springs? I know the 918's have a blue paint stripe and ls6 springs have the yellow paint stripe but that's about it.

I know aftermarket springs are bigger, but I don't know how small the stockers are.

I'm gonna pull my valve cover tomorrow so I know what I'm facing, be it a cam or a bad pcv valve.

Pulled the valve cover. Stock Springs.

Changed PCV valve to no avail.

Not sure what the deal is. Within the last 10k miles I've changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, cleaned/oiled K&N and more recently I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner along with my normal oil changes.

On a side note I actually closed my cutout and my car sounds like a v6.

Anybody have an idea of what to check next?

The idle set screw? lol. Lots of people mess with that crap for no apparent reason.

Check all vacumn line for cracks, etc. A leak will screw up your idle. I replaced a lot of old tubing on mine and idle went down to 700rpm and slight lope.

my car will idle at 650 with the cam if its warmed up, recently changed it to 725 though just because now that the temp has come up it gets confused on whether its starting cold or not for some reason

Well, I know mine idles correctly at under 600rpm when cold. All of the pcv/tb etc is ok. Mine gets pretty lopey though. Mine is bone stock. The 98s did have a wee larger cam that the rest of the years.
