Castrol Syntec 5W-30 just switched from Mobil1 5W-30 because the Castrol quiets it down a bit. I have also heard good things about the Mobil1 0W-30 its a european spec oil but have never used it. Don't waste your money on the Royal Purple its not worth it.

Red Line 30 in both my road-race-only LS1 and the L76 in my G8GT.
When they took apart my LS1 this summer, it had over 80k miles: 300 autoxes, 5000 miles of towing a 1000lb trailer and a few dozen track days/road races. We had new main and cam bearings ready to go in. Ended up leaving the stockers in there - they looked almost brand-spanking new. Only a few tiny scratches from dust and stuff.

Amsoil is probably the best, with Royal Purple a close second. Lots of evidence to back these assertions. I used Amsoil in my bikes and it's simply the best, IMHO.
I was running RP 10w30 all the time in my car but Advance has had a nice sale on Mobil 1 so I've been using M1 0w40 and I like it too. 5 quarts of M1 + M1 filter for 24.99 - can't beat it! Once I was able to get basically a 2 for 1 vs. the RP, that's when I switched. I have used Castrol Syntec (5-40 I think) and I liked it as well.
I use either the K&N oil filter or M1. I usually change mine every 5k as I do a **** ton of highway driving.
If the specials on my favorite back-ups stop, I'll go back to RP or Amsoil.
Check out bobistheoilguy dot com for some useful info. It almost was enough to try Pennzoil Platinum, though seeing the inside of Pennzoil-using motors prevents me from trying Pennzoil.

Mobil 1 10W-30
This is the only synthetic I've witnessed decrease my operating temps by 6 degrees F per my scanmaster. Hell, it dropped the overall temp in my Z71 Tahoe by 10 degrees!
