Whats the max safe cam lift for ls6 springs..

Default Whats the max safe cam lift for ls6 springs..

Im cam shopping for my cts-v

Ive narrowed it down to tunder racing cam

224/224 .563/.563 112 LSA

or

220/220 .551/.551 112 LSA


I'd like to get the 224, but is .563 lift pushing the LS6 springs to much?

Any opinions or other recommendations are welcome.


other cam i like is the Comp Cams LS1 Camshaft - 218 / 224 .527 / .534 114 ..

I THINK I remember hearing that the yellow springs are good to .550 lift. I would sure like to know for sure though. Not to hijack your thread but does anyone know if the LS6 springs are worth anything used in good condition?

I had that same thought when looking for a cam.
I have a crane cam Z cam that I just installed with LS6 heads.
Its a 224/224 114LSA on 0.551int/0.551exh Part #1449591
For me this was the best of both worlds. Found that the 02+ LS6 cam has 0.551int / 0.547exh lift which is practically the same.

Actualy you guys should look at cam seat pressure requirements and not how much lift it has.
Meaning that 2 cams with .570 lift let us say doesn't mean that they have same lobe agressiveness which is a big factor in determining proper springs.

So for cams above, yes 02 and later LS6 springs would work if shimmed to raise seat pressures. At 1.800 height they do not have enough.

Pac 1218 or Comp 918 would be better and have a longer life.

Just to add to Predator's comments, there have also been some failures of the LS6 yellow springs. So while less money, the extra $150 for a set of PAC 1518's would seem cheap if you have one fail.

i know im prolly gonna get crap for this but yes the tr224 will work with ls6springs atleast its been working for me for awhile now. i do plan on changing to something better like a pac 1218 this winter but they have been doing there job and i had a friend that drove his car alot with the same setup and MANY1/4 mile passes with the same setup and never had a bit of trouble.

No no crap, but i would keep an eye on them once a year or every 10K miles. It is above 6K rpm that it gets borderline.

Why are you trying to use LS6 springs and not some recommended for the camshaft your going to buy?

Camshaft - $350
Valve springs - $200
The look on your face when it drops a valve from breaking a cheap valve spring - priceless

Springs are cheaper than a motor, keep that in mind.

LS6 are good to 570, some people say 580 but i wouldnt push it. always better to upgrade if you can for cheap insurance. ps plenty of vettes rev to 6400 rpm with those springs so if they are new and your at 563 lift you should be fine. cheers.

Just go with a better valve spring as mentioned above, the ls6 might work for awhile but its not worth having to worry when it will fail.

i know weve been talking via PMs, but ill just say that even with an average ramp, i personally wouldnt do anything over 550. since thats what the stock LS6 cam is. if thats the safety margin GM wanted, id stick with that. if you use some aggressive lobe cam, then make the safety margin wider....

if you end up doing the hotcam or ASA, i wouldnt worry about it one bit...

When changing cams, to me its a no brainer to change valve springs as well. Its not only the lift that needs to be addressed, like Pred- Z said its the spring PRESSURE. So unless the LS6's have the correct amount of pressure and lift capabilities needed to control the valves, they might only last so long. If you have to shim them, are they going to have coil bind issues?

Its your motor and you do whatever you want, but new springs for a couple hundred bucks are a lot cheaper than a new motor if it drops a valve.

As previously stated, the advertised lift has no bearing on whether these springs can be used. It comes down to several things including (but not limited to) ramp rates (accelerations), seat values and stiffness. The LS6 springs have 90 lb in the seat, not much when you consider their designed use was a slower ramp rate cam and heads that have much lighter valves then most here are likely using them for here.

I have sen many stock LS6 motors that have dropped a valve because of the spring failure...if you are running a aftermarket cam purchase the correct springs for the cam...if you are sweating spending a couple of hundred dollars for springs you sure are not going to like the cost of replacing the damaged parts from a dropped valve...

i ran the green/yellow sttriped ones with a crane/vinci 220/224 551 114 for 2 years long trips daily drove it abd quite a few 6600rpm nitrous passes down the track....
this was also on stock 150,000 mile pushrods rocker arms and lifters...

I just put in a new set of ls6 heads and one of the valve springs broke 2k after the install. Keepers let go and the valve fell into the cylinder ENTIRELY... Piston is screwed but the bore is untouched

needless to say currently the motor is out and I'm going with better springs... hopefully I'm done before the end of August.

EDIT: i was running an ls6 cam... going bigger this time :wiggle:
