Help Bad lifter!

Default Help Bad lifter!

So i took apart my ls1 today and took off the head to inspect a number 8 misfire. pulled out the lifters and i found that the roller part is scratched up. i really dont want to pull the cam if i dont have to. what couldve caused this? trying to get it buttoned up before sundown so if you can help id appreciate the advice.

Well, the lifter could have spun in the tray, you could have had oil starvation / oil film breakdown, the surface hardening of your cam may have failed.

In any case (ulness you are not keeping the car), your next move should be to check the other lifters / inspect / replace the cam.

all the lifters are fine except for the last on on number 8. is there any way to inspect the cam lobe w/o pulling it? i.e. boroscope (sp?)?

if your lifters are out, you should be able to see the cam from the lifter holes.

you might as well pull it though, if your lifter barrels are scratched up i can almost guarantee your cam has been affected as well. just replacing that lifter is a temprorary solution that could last 5,000 miles or .5 - i wouldnt risk it.

pull the cam, it is most likely damaged.
