Are you wanting peak power, best torque, some of both, etc? What year and model car? What bolt-ons do you have currently and planned? Any power adder planned for the future? Six speed or auto (if auto what stall)?

Let us know some of these and we can help spec you a combo that fits your goals and budget nicely

yes itll make good power but it all depends on what you are looking for the thred in hand....

back to the post... i would do full exhaust and a tire atleast before you go with a h/c set up. itll come down to how much power you wanna make and do you want a big lopey cam that might make amazing power or something quiet that makes decent power

If he doesn't plan on taking it a track car, then I would stay with a street tire to preserve that rear end for as long as possible. He might just want some extra power for the street rather than better e.t's.

to get this thread back on track, it will all come down to BUDGET.... there is NO best when it comes to building up a car, there are combos that WORK and combos that dont.
If your look to save up for a combo, I would say TrickFlow 215's with a Custom Cam.
This will run you about $3500+ for a head/cam combo.
On top of the H/C your going to need supporting mods such as, headers and stall.

for a combo thats easy on the budget TSP (Texas Speed) has some great combos.
To help keep the build "cheap" go with factory cast heads i.e. the 243,799,241,ect..
the 243/799 are one of the best heads for the small bore LS1 motors. The 5.3L truck heads are great but I feel there is not much room to grow with them. The 243's cnc'ed are BAD *** heads. and I feel there is some growing room with these heads even is stock form. Another great head is a set of ported 241's , they will get the job done aswell and cam be picked up in stock form form $150 or so for the set. The 243's will run around $300 for a used set and $600 for a set from Scoggin Dickey.

GOOD LUCK, I hope this helped!

ditto...BUDGET....you can spend 2k or 9k very quickly on a top end/ bolt on build -head, cam, rockers, intake, headers, ewp,u/d pully

Hands down TFS 215 for heads. Id go with a vindicator cam with a ported Fast 92mm and a set of kooks or ARH 1-3/4 LTs.
TFS consisently put out big numbers.

Depends on what you want.

I like the Mamo set up listed above. AFR 205's milled with The Mamo 228 cam 450rwhp all day and DD it. Tons of low end TQ.

Wish I got that cam. But I love the TR224 with the AFR 205's milled. Add a FAST 92/92

well i think i saw that a set of milled/ported AFR's + a valve job from Tony mamo was coming up on $4,000 and add in some giant custom grind plus some 1 7/8" headers to a true dual exhaust, a ported FAST 92/92, FTRA with their 102mm lid and a 100mm MAF should make some killer power

...i dont wanna do the math on all that. $7,000+?? just a guess

yeah i jus figure if your planning on driving the car hard on the street why not get tires? burning through them is only fun till you need to buy a new set..

but yeah i would go with some trickflows and speed incs SI6 cam. that would make some nasty power. the cam specs are 235/240 if im correct. u should be around 500hp with that set up

Polluter, but with any big cam, you are going to need gears. I say 4.10's. That cam makes pretty good TQ numbers for such a big cam. If you plan on going with N20, it likes the juice too. Its a effin' loud cam, hence the name...

im getting ready to do the "most power / max output" build and so far am right there around 7K

PRC 215s, LS7 lifters, Yella Terras, Kooks 1 7/8, EWP, UD pulley, Fast 92/92

car already has an MS4 TDs and all the other bolt ons.

After that its a 300 shot of the giggly stuff and i figure that wil put me right around 800 to the tire. If your going max effort who cares about driveability, i think it will be hard to beat that combo

If you're running the stock flat-top pistons you've got two options:

First is the better option for more power, more durability, and the ability to grow more with you down the road. That would be the PRC 227's. These are PRC's new aftermarket casting cylinder heads, which offer the thicker deck surface, laid over valve angle, powdered metal guides (no need for a roller rocker in many cases), etc!

We can set them up with the small chamber to work with your small bore engine, and you'll have the piston to valve clearance you need with the MS4!

The more budget oriented heads are the PRC Stage 1 LS6 heads. They are a CNC ported GM LS6 head using stock valves to keep your piston to valve clearance as good as possible in a GM casting.

Let us know if we can help!

WOW I never knew milled/ported + valve jobbed AFRs were $4k. I'd just settle with a set of TFS 215s
