Question Top end ?'s Bolts vs studs

Ok so I am doing a turbo build putting on 317 heads, .051 MLS gaskets and a 02 z06 cam, just wondering who has a good price on the gaskets I need (I have head gaskets) and if its worth it or even possible to use studs without taking the motor out?

Of course like everyone else I looked at the "knock off" head stud kit on e-bay, wondered about that for $69 + shipping.

Also if I do get the ARP (or any stud for that matter) how do you torque them down, do you need to torque the stud then the nut or just bottom out the stud and torque the nut?

I'll probably keep this open for future questions.

You do not torque the studs into the block just tighen them till they botton out in the hole install the heads and head gasket and then you torque the nuts to the prescribed ft lbs.

PS Yeah I forgot about the backing them out a 1/4 turn after they bottom out..it has been a few years since I did mine.. chase those threads in the block that way you get all the crap out of those holes..make sure you have no liquid in the holes too you do not want to crack your block

Yeah, install the studs by hand, which could be tough because of the crap left behind from the factory bolts, but I beleive ARP actually reccomends backing them out a quarter turn after bottoming them out.

What these guys said above ^^

Plus you need to clean and chase those block threads good.
Since you're doing a turbo build, those ARP headstuds certainly wont hurt.

Skip the cheap knockoffs and go with a quality fastener like the factory bolts or the ARPs. The studs should have an allen head EDM'd into the end so you can spin them down easily. X2 on cleaning out the threads and using air/vacuum to be sure all the fluid and gunk is out of the hole. Spin them down until they bottom and then back them off slightly. Don't forget a little anti-seize on the head side and moly lube on the nut side.

Thanks for all the comments! Will do! Can you run the studs in with the heads set in place on the dowel pins or is there really enough room to get the head over the stud once its in?

Ohh, and what about where to get studs from? Maybe even a gasket kit
(minus bolts and head gaskets since i'll be using studs and have gaskets)
PM's Welcome
