Default 383 question

What is a good cam for a DD that will see the track maybe 2-3 times a year.
In the process of stroking my ls1 to a 383, and plan on running ls6 stg 2 heads.

Looking for a reliable set up, with decent numbers.

Its best to not only match the cam choice to your C.I. but also to compliment your heads.

Best best is to contact your head manufacture and get thier advice on a cam selection for your 383.

I'm running the AFR heads on my 383, and Tony Mamo at AFR was able to get me the perfect cam for me and my setup.

I've got a 383 in my Trans Am that is daily driver 99% on the time. In fact, I haven't even had it to the track yet (too damn hot in Houston!).

I'm running a Comp Cams 224 intake duration, 230 exhaust duration with .609"/.604" lift on a 114 LSA. Most will say it's too small for a 383, but I really don't care. It's not a track car, makes over 400 pounds of torque and drives around town great. No surging, bucking, etc. Hell, check out AFR's Tony Mamo's 383 build thread and he started with their own 224/228 cam.

I'm running a F13(230/232-.595/.585-114+4) with budget heads and a 90/90 set-up and the torque is sick! Wish I could afford some trickflows...

Yes, it is very doable. With a good set of heads and a mild cam and good tuning.

Do you want a little lumpity lump or stockish sound?

Default 383 cam

My cam is 234/238 .598int/.605exh. 114lsa. I drive my car everyday, it's my commuter (26 mi. each way). No issues whatsoever in town or on the freeway, pulls pretty hard too. Built by some guy in his garage, more details here:

I'd like something around 112-113lsa, not sure if i can afford AFR heads, but i'm intrested in those who have reached the 450+rwhp with ls6 stg2 heads and what cam you've used to do so?

I need alot of help from you guys on getting a good set-up, because there really isn't any perfomance shops in newfoundland that know anything about lsx cars.

overlap causes mroe of that lopey sound than LSA does. im sure Pred, Pat G, or a sponsor will drop in here with some setup ideas. custom grind cam is the way to go! my advice: get the absolute best head syour budget will allow, and then match it to the heads.

great heads + small cam = good power
bad heads + big cam = low power
great heads + cam to match flow = GREAT POWER!

combo is the name of the game. find a good tuner and you can get away with a bigger cam. but if like you said there isnt a good one around, you might want to take a trip down here to the states to find one! mail order is always an option, in which case i recommend Frost 9look him up here) but a mail order isnt ideal for a 383.

Im using a 287 Comp Cam (238/240). Pulls hard from almost any rpm. I wouldnt run it as a DD as it is. I just have a mailorder tune. Hopefully the manners will get better if I ever get it tuned.
