Default Looking for Cams that produce good Low end TQ ..

I don't get to the track all that often (twice a year maybe) .. I do enjoy the road a little bit though ... Looking for a cam to go with either the Patriot LQ9s or the 5.3L stage IIs.

I currently have the G5 cam which for cam only puts up pretty good TQ numbers at about 380rwtq....

What are some options out there putting up good tq numbers as well as fairly good HP numbers with these heads.

Also , does anyone have some dyno numbers (or graphs would be good) .. with these heads an no OPEN cutout ..

thanks,
Crowley

The differences in the heads you are looking at is kind of unique. One is gonna raise compression and one will drop it (all else staying the same, of course). Most of the 222-224 cams are making good torque down low. The bigger ones may be better up top, but they may not be as potent down low. Ask around...I'm sure you'll get more feedback.

Get a 224/224 type cam with a 112 LSA. Those are very nice daily-driver cams, with a good mid/low torque feel.

Thanks for the replies .. I'm actually looking for something larger than my current G5 cam, but doesn't sacrifice alot of the LOW END that some of these bigger cams might ..

thanks,

If you want to go bigger than the G5, you're getting to a point where you cannot have your cake & eat it to..IE: Can't have both bottom and top. Bigger cams make the most power in only one place, HIGH rpm's.

How much advance does your cam have? Might want to try advancing the cam and bringing your ICL down. That's going to move your powerband lower and more TQ numbers lower in the rpm range. I would suggest this before buying a bigger cam, which is NOT going to give you the low end TQ you want.

This is exactly why I went with my 224.

Go with the 224 cam 581 lift 112 ls from Texas Speed. I just had that cam and it had big time low end.

I second what DG and Tony say on the 224 XE-R type cam. I have an SRP on a 113 LSA. The cam gained over stock from 2,200 rpms (start of dyno pull) on. Makes over 350rwtq from 2,700 rpm to 6,300 rpm. It pulls 390 rwtq at 4000 rpms. 400 rwtq from 4500rpm to 5300 rpm. Peak is 404 at 4800 rpm.

How the (0, +2, +4, etc) will effect this as do other supporting mods.

The LSX intake might respond differently etc..

BTW if my car had a true underdrive pulley and light weigh flywheel...I think the torque would be higher at all rpms.

another vote for down grading to 224. or consider the 230 too. going bigger you'll have to worry more about p2v clearance and possilby fly cutting the pistons.

I went with 228/228 .588 112LSA. I've seen a lot of people go with 224 and 230, so I went with something in between the two I can't find anyone that has this cam to see what numbers were made, hopefully I picked something good. I'll find out soon enough.
