Default Advice about cam install.

Im a newbie so please bear w/ me if about the questions. I have a 2001 ws6 m6 w/ 143,000 all highway miles. It is bone stock except for Lt headers slp lid & ory. Its my DD & was wondering wether I need to rebuild the engine or replace bearings etc. w/ the cam selection that I made. I bought a TSP MS4 cam w/ the stage 1 ls6 heads w/ hd timing chain. I am waiting to purchase a bored ls6 oil pump & upgrade the water pump. I would like to keep it as my DD would like yalls recommendation on any other supporting mods? would the FAST 90 intake & tb make a huge difference? Which rocker arms would be better 1.7 or 1.8? I was wanting to know wether I would need to upgrade to 1 7/8 headers. This is my first cam install & wanted to know wether the cam has to be degreed as I have heard many different views on this matter. Thanks in advance.

That MS4 is going to need some good exhaust and intake.

Definitely go for the 1 7/8 headers.

143,000 miles + MS4 = disaster without new or lower mile valvetrain components in my mind.

That being said, that cam needs to breathe so a 90 is not a bad idea.
1 7/8ths won't be worth it yet IMO. Figure out if you're going to get a fast 90 before you get bigger lt's.
If you're still on stock cubes and an ls6 intake, bigger headers sounds like a waste.
Put that money torwards your valvetrain.

if you are on a budget you do not NEED a Fast. Unless you think 1200 dollars is worth 15 horsepower. Be sure to upgrade your valvetrain, including lifters, pushrods, and springs.

Ok thanks for the input. I am looking into a FAST intake & plan on replacing the valvetrain. Do you think the bottom end will hold up?

with a cam that big it is a toss up. Some motors could handle it some cant. It is vry possible that if done right your motor could hold up just fine. There are many things that could be worn out. I recomdend getting a leakdown test and compression test done before the install. That will give you a good idea how strong your motor is.

Good luck buddy

As it hasnt been touched on yet, the rockers you should use are stock 1.7 ratio...the factory ones are good but dont upgrade to the 1.8's as that will give more lift decreasing piston to valve clearance which is pretty tight to begin with.

Save the money you'd spend on the FAST and get a good clutch and a set of gears. That MS4 is going to be really soggy below 3500 on the street...4.10's are what you really need.

I hope your not too much of a newbie...your putting a monster camshaft in your DD, lol.

I agree.

What made you choose the MS4 over something like the TR224 or 228R? Was it your hatred towards low end torque? hahaha

there is nothing wrong with an MS4 Daily Driver with supporting mods to back it up and not expect it to ride like a benze.

I am a newbie when it comes to GM vehicles. Ive only been in the automotive industry for to years & my experience is w/ european imports. I was avtually wanting the MS3 & TSP 5.3 heads but I found the MS4 & stage 1 ls6 heads for a price I couldnt refuse.

-Would 3.73 gear ratios work? Or are 4.10 a must?
-Would you recommend harland sharp or summit racing 1.7 rockers?
-Which manufacturer makes good lifters to use w/ this combo?
-I was planning on getting a mail in tune. have any of you used TSP or Nelson Performance?

3.73's will work but 4.10's will will be quicker and easier to drive in traffic
For the lifters there are a lot of options. You may want to ask TSP about that. The LS7 lifters are Mail in tunes are never your best option, especially for a H/C setup, because there are so many variables. However that being said i would say TSP. Seeing as though they designed your setup and would know it the best.
