The way I see it is....If you are replacing a part and are going through the hassle you might as well upgrade

there are many choices out there, you could look at some of our sponsors and find one. I personally think that byunspeed (they are a sponsor here) has some good prices on rollmaster's double roller timing chains. I would consider my options, but as supperspeed pointed out if you are replacing it you might want to upgrade.

How could you upgrade the timing chain? What can be "upgraded" on one? My LS1 is just a bolt-on and the stock one lasted 168k miles.

Go to Texas Speed they have a LS2 double roller for LS1 application, that's how you upgrade.

Here are some pics I took during my build of the LS1 next to the LS2 chains. Look closely and you will see wich one is the better choice. I personally went with the Katech C5R chain but I am turning beyond 7K rpm's.

Which one is the C5R chain?

The stock GM replacement chain for the LS1 is the LS2/3. The old LS1 chain was superseded by the LS2 long ago.

Sure, go buy one and you'll quickly find out. Prove it to yourself.

As was posted before .... GM superseeded the LS1 chain with the LS2 chain years ago. That is real old news. If you buy one you will see the difference.

There's no decision to make here. Except for an ultra performance application, go with the LS2 chain.

It's stout, cheap, and installs with no fuss.

Since you are going to be that far into it, install a cam. Even if it's something as budget as the LS6 cam.

Guess who just used the search feature....

<< This guy right here.

Related question: Have a 55K mile motor that went forced induction about 20K miles ago and I'm about to do a cam swap. Is it necessary to upgrade the timing chain? If I do the upgrade, do I need just the LS2 chain or do I have to get the gear set as well? $50 is $50...

I was contemplating on just putting it back together, then thought about a TR224, all the way up to an F13... I think I'm going to put a 228

Picture of the carnage (so far anyway)

Hopefully the new chain will be in today.
