Exclamation I know nothing about internals... please help with a cam

I'm going to start looking for a cam this winter to have ready for spring. I know nothing about lobe, duration, etc. So if someone can point me in a good direction, i'd appreciate it. Now, I plan on getting my car dynotuned after the install, and at that point in time, I plan on having the following mods...

Lid, long tubes, catback, plugs/wires, pulley(s), and a cam. What would work best for me? I ran 13.0 @ 111 with the lid, loudmouth, and d/r's. What could I expect with the cam, long tubes, and pulley? Is the pulley going to even be worth it? When I do the cam, should I replace the timing gears/chain? Jeez, sorry to sound so dumb.

Well you need to give us more info of what you what out of your car to see what cam you need. Daily driver?
track time? weekends only?

A4 or M6..
SO with little info I would take a stap and say a 224/224 on a 114 would be good for you. but as you answer the above questions that may change.

Do a search in the begineers fourm and this internal fourm. Search for 'cam basics' there was an excellent post for people like you and I who want to pick a cam and want a simple definition on all of the terms used, lift, duration, lsa, etc...

Is this what you're refering to?

Pretty lengthy. I don't have time to take a look at it right this moment.

Give this a shot, you did not find the post I was hoping you would find but this article looks to be even better than the one I was talking about, good simple info...

Wow, that looks pretty good. You know, I also have that LS1/LS6 performance book (that one with the LS6 on the front). I'm pretty sure they explain all that stuff in there too. I should just take some time tonight and read.

Back to the cam choices...

I see the G5x2 (is that right?) keeps coming up all over. Then I see this new TSP cam? What is it I should be looking for?

part of a the cam process is doing your own research. it goes a long way. when you can understand and grasp the concepts and numbers you can then pic out a cam that is right for your specific application. advice is good and recommendations are good but firmly understanding yourself is even better. case in point you bring up the g5x2, thats not for the faint heart or even remotely emissions friendly if indeed you have to pass the sniffer.

The only emissions we have here are the visual and gas cap. I will start to research this evening and throughout the next couple weeks. Hopefully Santa will bring me some $ $ so I can make my purchase.

Dmnspd,
I still think you might want to look at a TR224/224-566-566/112 (TR= Thunder Racing a sponser)
or a TSP224/224/581-581/112 (Texas Speed and performance also a sponser) these are very good tried and true cams.
Now if you want to go bigger than these, you should know why you want to go bigger and what it will effect and what to exspect.

Good luck with your choice

Pete
