Default Purchasing Off Shelf Camshaft, checklist

I am purchasing a camshaft within the next week. Funds are available, just wanting to make sure I get everything correct.

MS4 Cam kit includes Cam
Springs
Pushrods

I am buying a pushrod checker
LS2 Timing Chain(kit or just the chain?)
5/16 wooden dowel rods(Hobby Lobby)
Longer crank bolt
Spring Install tool
Magnet pen for retainers

I cant think of anything else. Please suggest a tool or part if you think it would help, I have alot of tools, but lets assume I have nothing besides the basic wrenches, jacks, stands, and screwdrivers.

I am not interested in swapping the lifters/trays or oil pump. Car only has 60K on it. What size rods do yall think I should order with the kit? I am getting a checker too, but for your best guess, what are other MS4 guys running?

Anything to add/comment upon? I have Joseph's new LSX Book that will be guiding me along as well.

Wish me luck

Also, does anyone know of a shop, local would be nice, Houston, that could possibly profile the cam to see if it is ground true, or tell me how degrees to advance/retard the timing without me having to degree it in the engine?

TIA

It comes with hardened chromoly in any length, so I should go with the stocker 7.400" length? I am using the stock heads.

It also comes with PRC Platinum doubles up to .660" lift. Or should I upgrade to the .675" lift for $50.00. Wouldn't that be a stiffer spring and cost me a few ponies due to the stiffer setup?

EDIT: also, what LSA? It comes with 110 as is. What are some of you MS4 guys running?

Get aluminum dowels (Loews or Home Depot)

Wooden ones can and have broken off in the engine, Aluminum ones are easily cut and ground down to taper the edge, oil them up and use them.

+1 thats what i did. Worked great..... one side probably wont need to be ground down just the passenger side dowel IME. But that may vary.

So I have everything covered?

MS4 cam
PRC Plat Doubles
7.400"
LS2 Timing Kit
ARP Crank Bolt
Chrysler Harmonic balancer removal tool
WP Gasket
Timing Cover Gasket
Coolant
Front O2s
Fuel Filter
Air Filter

06tx4.8 is gonna swing by and lend me hand and bring along some specialty tools, dowels, and spring compressor. Do I need any kind of lube? Special additive for oil or lube for the cam?

I dont see oil pump O-ring in the parts list, and if you plan on taking it off or the tube off I'd get a new one.

You dont need to pull the intake off to change cams, so not sure why you needs gaskets unless your changing intakes?

If you're not going to check pushrod length (bad suggestion), I'd recommend a 7.425" pushrod. The aggressive ramps on that intake lobe require an even smaller base circle than say an XER lobe, and will use a longer pushrod.

Having the cam "doctored" so you know exactly what it is, is always nice. But you still have the timing set variable in there, and won't know if it needs advanced or retarded until it is in the vehicle with the degree wheel. Get our cam swap bolt/gasket kit. It'll save you a few bucks as compared to buying those gaskets and bolt all separately, and includes the front seal too which is not on your list.

I guess your right about the intake, duh! I cannot remember off the top of my head from ls1howto and my engine book, but do I need to take the tube off for this? Do they sell at local parts store or what? Where do I get it if I need it?

Thanks Matt, fixed the correct PR, and I ordered the cam swap bolt/gasket kit.

Also, this wont be on a 110 LSA, they don't stock that, the standard is 111, which is what I chose.

Its not necessary, just recommended since you have everything apart.
