Arrow I have a 6.0L block lined up to buy, have questions...

I'm about to purchase a used 6.0L iron block.

The guy that I am buying it from gets GM warranty returns and parts out LS1/6.0L engines.

The block that he has, was a long block, but is just selling me the bare block. He says he has been in the car parts business for over 20 years and he wants payment through PayPal. He sounds totally legit but I have a few questions.

Once I get the bare block, I don't plan on doing anything with it for a year or so, (lack of $$$ to do my 409 right now), should I get the block checked out for defects?

Cracks, scores on the cyl walls, etc....

Should I get it sonic tested, tanked?

How much is the average for a shop to check it out to make sure it is a good block to use as a rebuild?

It's probably not a good idea to get all the machine work done now is it, cause it will probably rust over the next year? Is there any way to prevent it from not rusting even if I don't get the block done?

Thanks in advance guys...

You can coat the block with a material called Cosmosline to prevent rust, but it's kind of a PITA getting it off later on. I would just put the block indoors somewhere out of the weather with a good coat of oil on it.

Paint the outside of the block if it isn't already painted black from the factory and then coat the inside of the cylinders with a light coat of grease, and don't store it around water

So just coat it with oil until I'm ready to build it completely?

Yes. You just want to keep it from rusting. When you get ready to build it they will most likely put it in the vat, so the oil won't hurt anything.
