Default How many miles on your 2618 forged piston engine?

I heard that the 2618 alloy used in most aftermarket forged pistons (especially FI pistons) are stronger than most of the alternatives, but because of their fit and hardness, eventually wear/scuff the cast iron cylinder bores.

How many miles do you have on your engine with 2618 forged pistons?

Is it a normal stroke or a 4" stroker? What size bore?

If you've had it apart, was there any scuffing or wear?

Any other comments?

2618 is softer than the 4032 or factory cast piston, this makes it perfect for high hp engines so that it resists cracking. Normally high miles 2618 engines that I have seen will have the ring lands worn. This should be less apparent if the engine was torque plate honed and quality oils were used. My opionion is 2618 is great at high power levels, but be prepared to change pistons at 40-50,000 miles if you start losing the ring seal.

Wow, that's good to know. I saw one of the posts say something about having the bores ruined at 5,000 - 7,000 miles... which seemed really low.

So its the pistons that wear, and not the bores?

That has been what I have seen. The ring groove wears and the side clearance increases. I have 4032 pistons in my boosted DD with 100,000 on them now, hoping to replace the engine next summer and see how this one looks inside. It sounds like a diesel now but still performs well and uses about 1 quart of oil in 4000 miles.

I would think the piston would always be the first to wear. Unless I am missing something, the surface hardness of iron (bore) or steel (rings) is above that of aluminum.

Look in forced induction under 107,000 boosted miles come to an end. It broke the number 6 ex lifter finally!
