Exclamation Oil Pump O-ring problem! HELP!

Guys, I've always read that the truck engines come with the red O-ring for the oil pump pick up tube. I was pulling the oil pump off of my 6L (2003 out of Escalade) earlier to replace with a new one before I put the engine in the truck (with truck oil pan/oil pick-up tube obviously). To my suprise, the oring on the pickup tube wasn't a red one. It is this green (blue?) oring pictured above. Should I install the new pump with the new red o-ring or should I hunt down one like I pulled off of it? If i recall correctly, its the actual pick-up tube that requires the larger oil ring; however, the pumps will fit all o-rings, correct? 12586665 is the part number for the pump that I have to replace this one. Any help is VERY much appreciated! Thanks!

I would replace it with an identical sized o ring. Color isn't important. Size is.

Call a local dealer or NAPA store, tell them the year, make, model and they should have what you need. I too had heard of diff colors but like said, replace as what was in there would be the best way.

Dont worry about what color it is, just the fit. Saying that, I probably wouldnt use the red one. I was told the dealer wouldnt carry that part, just to go to a parts store and match it up.

I had 3 different "o" rings that came with a Fel Pro timing set. None of them matched the original for either colour or size. I suppose I was to match up the closest one for thickness and ID/OD.

I threw them all in the trash and bought an EXACT duplicate from the dealer. Oil pump isn't something you want to **** with.

Be sure the O-ring is suitable for engine oil contact if your matching size.

The o-ring seal size is dependant on the pickup tube flange design. Most fbody use standard blue o-ring.

If there is an o-ring recess on the flange, normally the larger green o-ring is needed.

There should not be a loose gap behind the o-ring but it should not be an extremely tight fit too.

info taken from Potak's new book by the way...

i think i read on the paper with my new oil pump that for all the truck motors a green o ring should be used. i have the green o ring i can give it to you but im not sure if u want to wait that long for shipping. just go to the dealer and get the correct one

They are color coded for a reason, like stated above, if the pickup tube has a recessed area where the o-ring goes you need the thicker RED o-ring. The trucks use this design.

LT1 bird has the CORRECT info. Use it. I just went thru this w/ my 05/6.0 Hummer engine. The red ring is what we found to be correct.
Blu was too small. [Dlr parts dept got it rite!]

ok, I have a quick question i bought a ported melling pump and it came with the two o-rings one is a smaller black one and the other is larger blue (opposite of what the gm colors are) the blue one seemed too tight to fit and the black one fits but seems like I could get something a little tighter

BTW this is on a 98 ls1 (f-body block and oil tube)
